Two Haileyburians to climb Mt Kilimanjaro

Two Haileyburians, Callum Richardson (L; L6) and OH sister Gabriella (Aby; 2011), are to climb the highest mountain in Africa in November, raising money for two charities in the process.

The entire Richardson family is undertaking the expedition to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT) and Children in Crossfire, two charities working to improve the lives of desperately poor children in Uganda and Tanzania. Gabriella has worked in Tanzania since leaving school, helping to teach deaf and disabled children and to re-build some of their schools and classrooms. After talking about her experiences with Callum, the two were keen to do as much as possible to help.

The expedition will take ten days with a short time to acclimatise prior to spending seven days on the mountain. Fitness training has been going well and the family will meet up with Gabriella in Arusha on 12 November to begin the climb later that day. Mount Kilimanjaro is famous for its varying climate and the climbers will face tropical rainforest heat, torrential rain and then freezing temperatures for the final assault to the 5895m summit. All costs are being covered so that every penny raised will go directly to the charities.
