Haileybury Speech Day welcomed over 2,000 guests

29 May 2019

More than 2,000 pupils, parents, staff and guests came together to celebrate achievements over the past year and say farewell to leavers on Saturday 25 May during Speech Day.

The day started with a moving commemoration service in Chapel, with The Reverend Rob Gillion, Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Lincoln and formerly Bishop of Riverina, Australia.

This was followed by speeches in the marquee on Terrace. The Chairman of Haileybury Council, Mr Alan Pilgrim, welcomed everybody, and then the Master, Mr Martin Collier, delivered an inspirational and moving speech, celebrating the impressive academic, sporting and co-curricular successes of our pupils.

Musician Maria performed a beautiful version of Frédéric Chopin’s, Étude and the Lower School Choir sang Every Time I Feel the Spirit.

It was then time for prizes, which were presented to pupils by the guest of honour and Old Haileyburian, Professor William Harvey (E 95).

Many of the prizes awarded were for pupils who have excelled in their academic subjects over the past year.

The Heads of School, Alexander and Zofia, delivered heartfelt and inspirational speeches, as did Lower School pupil, Roman.

At the end of the speeches, everyone dispersed onto the Quad for a buffet lunch and drinks, where they’ve had the opportunity to catch up and socialise. There was plenty of sporting and artistic action to keep the crowds entertained.

Both boys’ and girls’ 1st XI cricket teams played against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC); such fantastic games and many congratulations to both sides for playing with determination and pride.

Over in the Art School there was an outstanding showcase of this year’s GCSE, A levels and Upper Sixth IB artist’s work for people to look at, beautifully displayed in the gallery spaces.

The day was also a chance to say farewell to our Upper Sixth leavers, who have contributed a huge amount to school life in recent years; we wish them every success in the future.

A big well done to all of the prize-winners, our guests and families that attended and thanks to everyone who contributed to making Speech Day 2019 so joyful and a special Haileybury community event - we couldn’t be prouder!
