Haileybury Admissions

Sports Scholarships

At Haileybury, sport has always played a central role in the life and reputation of the College. Sport Scholarships recognise and reward the most outstanding candidates. Available to pupils seeking to join the College at 11+, 13+ or 16+, they are awarded to those who exhibit particular skills in a given sport and strong competitive and leadership potential.

Sports Scholarships

Nurturing future champions

At Haileybury, sport has always played a key role in the life of the College and many of our alumni have gone on to play at team, county and national level.

We are proud to have world-class sports coaches, including Michael Owen (Wales and British Lions), Daan van Bunge (played in two Cricket World Cups) and Darren Cheesman (GB Hockey international).

Our Sports Scholars are those with strong sporting and leadership abilities and a particularly impressive competitive ethic.

Sports scholars receive a fee remission of up to 30% for outstanding candidates. All those entering the College at 13+ and 16+ will also receive an invitation to the Haileybury High Performance Programme.

Please note that we are an academically selective school. As well as taking part in our sports assessment days, all potential sports scholars will be required to meet our academic entry criteria including entry assessments and interviews.

11+ Sports Scholarship

Attitude, athletic ability and raw talent are our key factors in selecting a sports scholar at this age. We award scholarships in hockey, netball, lacrosse, tennis, rugby, cricket and football. Experience in these sports is not a prerequisite, but might be a potential benefit.

Sports Scholars are assessed on designated assessment days. The schedule of the day can be subject to change but typically includes the following:

  • Fitness testing
  • A training session in your first choice sport
  • 2 other training sessions of choice from: rugby, hockey, football, lacrosse, netball, cricket, tennis or rackets
  • An interview with our Director of Sport, Andy Searson
  • A short presentation on your personal sporting history and background
  • A tour of the school and facilities by our current England U18 pupils

Haileybury Scholars are expected to be active and positive contributors to the College’s sporting life throughout the year, setting an impeccable example on and off the field of play.

13+ Sports Scholarship

Excellence of performance, an immense level of promise and/or potential for leadership in one sport can lead to the award of a scholarship. It might be an advantage to be able to offer these attributes in more than one sport, but it is not a prerequisite. We award scholarships in hockey, netball, lacrosse, tennis, rugby, cricket & football.

The schedule of the assessment day can be subject to change but typically includes the following:

  • Fitness testing
  • A training session in your first choice sport
  • 2 other training sessions of choice from: rugby, hockey, football, lacrosse, netball, cricket, tennis or rackets
  • An interview with our Director of Sport, Andy Searson
  • A short presentation on your personal sporting history and background
  • A tour of the school and facilities by our current England U18 pupils

Haileybury Scholars are expected to be active and positive contributors to the College’s sporting life throughout the year, setting an impeccable example on and off the field of play.

Every Scholar (from 13+) will also be invited to join the HHPP (Haileybury High Performance Programme) and thus have the best possible chance of maximising their potential.

16+ Sports Scholarship

High performance in a nominated sport, leadership skills and a first class attitude are all essential attributes at 16+. We award scholarships in hockey, netball, lacrosse, tennis, rugby, cricket & football. There is the opportunity to showcase your ability in more than just your nominated sport, if you wish, but it is certainly not a prerequisite. We are aware that, in some cases, specialisation has already occurred at this age.

The assessment day typically includes the following:

  • Fitness testing
  • A training session in your first choice sport (compulsory)
  • An opportunity to train in a second/third choice sport (voluntary)
  • Leading a short training session for younger pupils in a sport of choice (for leadership purposes)
  • An interview with our Director of Sport, Andy Searson
  • A short presentation on your personal sporting history and background
  • Tour of the school and facilities by our current England U18 pupils

Haileybury Scholars are expected to be active and positive contributors to the College’s sporting life throughout the year, setting an impeccable example on and off the field of play.

Every 16+ Scholar will also be invited to join the HHPP (Haileybury High Performance Programme) and thus have the best possible chance of maximising their potential.
