Rugby

Under the expert guidance of former Wales and Lions captain Michael Owen, rugby is a core part of the sporting programme at Haileybury.

This, combined with a prestigious fixture list, excellent facilities and superb teacher engagement in the coaching process, make Haileybury an excellent place to participate and excel in the sport.

Haileybury’s rugby heritage stretches right back to the 19th century. We have an excellent and competitive fixture list playing schools from near and far. The highlight of the season is an annual First XV fixture at Allianz Park.

Expert coaching

The set up at Haileybury comes under our Director of Rugby Michael Owen (ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions Captain and Level 4 coach). Running a team of 20+ highly-invested coaches – with a wide-range of experience and quality – Michael ensures that every pupil is exposed to the very latest coaching techniques. The addition of a strength and conditioning coach has further boosted the opportunities for our players to maximise their athleticism and develop into the best athletes they can be.

Superb facilities

The pitches are well maintained and our first team pitch hosted Argentinian and USA during the 2015 RWC. We also have a free weights gym and make use of this for as many pupils as possible. The first team squad also utilise the local cross-fit box at Cross-fit Huntsman. For many, of course, our XV pitch, with its stunning backdrop of Terrace and Chapel, is the envy of many a visiting school.

Solid funding

A key part of the success we enjoy at Haileybury lies in the generous funding rugby receives here.

In particular, we are particularly lucky to have very generous financial support from the Old Haileyburian RFC who contribute significantly each year both in terms of new equipment and subsidising tours.

This ensures that the College is able to invest in a continuous upgrading and improvement of facilities, ensuring that Haileybury is able to endeavour to reach the top of the schoolboy game in the UK.

Scholarships

Sports Scholars are those that are seen to have one of the key attributes of Attitude, Skills or Athleticism for rugby/ Scholarships for talented rugby players are hotly contested; the best will also be invited to join our High Performance Sports Programme. The link at the bottom of this page gives more information about Sports Scholarships at Haileybury.

Famous players

For every pupil who wishes to play rugby, they can be sure of joining an august group; Haileybury boasts several famous players among its rugby-playing alumni.

The most successful of our modern day leavers include Chris Wyles (Saracens and USA), Jamie George (Saracens, England and B&I Lions) and Nick Isiekwe (Saracens & England).

Tours

Tours form a regular part of the rugby set up at Haileybury. An enormous amount can be learnt: on the rugby field, there can’t have ever been a better pre-season training experience, enabling us to start the season with real impetus, but from a more global perspective.

World Cup school

With such a superb range of facilities on offer, combined with expert coaching and solid funding, there really has never been a better time for a promising young player to join Haileybury than now.

For everyone wanting to learn and play rugby, and be coached by some of the very best school coaches, there is also no better choice than Haileybury.

Sporting links

Haileybury maintains excellent links with a number of rugby clubs including Saracens (where four OHs have played), Hertford and of course the Old Haileyburian RFC. We also enjoy close liaison with the England RFU on the sporting development of key pupils.
