Gareth Lewis (MSci, PGCE, QTS)
Head of STEM Research and Stan-X Co-Lead
With a Master’s degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography from the University of Southampton, Mr Lewis is at the forefront of cutting-edge genetic research. He is currently engaged in generating novel transpositional lines of Drosophila through targeted transgenesis using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, collaborating closely with the prestigious Seung Kim Laboratory at Stanford University. This work not only advances our understanding of genetics but also provides invaluable research opportunities for Haileybury pupils. Mr Lewis’s research interests extend to geoengineering, with a particular focus on iron ocean fertilisation experiments, demonstrating his commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. His diverse scientific background and innovative research approach significantly contribute to Haileybury’s reputation as a leader in STEM education, inspiring the next generation of scientists and researchers.
Arthur Kattavenos (MSc, BEd)
Head of Science and CubeSat
Mr Kattavenos is an experienced educator with a strong background in physics and science. Since beginning his science teaching career in 1986, Mr Kattavenos has dedicated himself to fostering a deep understanding of scientific principles among his pupils. In 2016, he took on the role of Head of Science at Haileybury, where he has been instrumental in leading innovative educational initiatives. Under his guidance, pupils are engaged in projects that explore the meaning of innovation and its practical applications in the modern world.
Dr Liam Duffy (MSci, DPhil, PGCE, QTS)
Deputy Head of STEM Research and CubeSat Lead
Dr Duffy holds a DPhil in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Oxford, where his research on three-dimensional magnetic topological insulator thin films and heterostructures earned him an MPLS Commendation. Dr Duffy’s work, which has implications for quantum computing, involved sophisticated techniques like Molecular Beam Epitaxy and measurements at international synchrotron and neutron facilities. His academic background also includes an MSci from Royal Holloway, University of London, with a focus on nanotechnology and magnetism. Currently, Dr Duffy is spearheading the innovative research project in collaboration with BAE Systems, aimed at constructing and deploying a CubeSat into low Earth orbit. This project serves as both an environmental monitoring tool and an educational platform in space engineering for our pupils.
Mr Lloyd Stark
STEM Research Engineer and Biology Lab Technician
As an experienced design engineer, Mr Stark has developed expertise in oven-controlled quartz-crystal oscillators (OCXOs), a critical technology in precision timekeeping and frequency control. Mr Stark’s credentials include a prestigious European Space Agency soldering qualification, underscoring his technical proficiency in high-stakes engineering environments. His background as a service engineer in environmental monitoring for art conservation demonstrates his ability to apply engineering principles to interdisciplinary fields. Additionally, Mr Stark has a wealth of practical industry knowledge through his experience as an electronic engineer in the shipping industry, where he successfully established his own business.
Miss Victoria Turner (BSc, PGCE, QTS)
Stan-X Co-Lead
With a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Reading, Miss Turner specialised in the fascinating field of aphid parasitism genetics. Miss Turner is currently engaged in groundbreaking research, collaborating closely with the prestigious Seung Kim Laboratory at Stanford University. Her work focuses on generating novel transpositional lines of Drosophila through targeted transgenesis using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, contributing to advancements in genetic engineering. Her scientific interests span entomology and social psychology, reflecting her multidisciplinary approach to science education.
Mr Roger Lapidge (BA, BSc)
Greenpower Lead
With an initial background in Architecture from Hammersmith College of Art & Building and a BSc in Electromechanical Engineering from the Open University, Mr Lapidge’s career has spanned diverse fields. His professional journey led him from designing buildings to developing sophisticated electronic, computer-based locking systems, primarily for the Ministry of Defence. Mr. Lapidge’s passion for sustainable transport across land, sea, and air reflects his forward-thinking approach to engineering challenges.
Mr Andy Perrin (BA, QTS)
Vex Robotics Lead
With a degree in Design and Technology from Brighton University, Mr Perrin’s academic foundation is complemented by his distinguished 12-year career in the Army as a telecommunications engineer, where he specialised in the high-stakes fields of bomb disposal and Counter IED operations. His current interests in robotics and 3D printing reflect his commitment to cutting-edge technology and innovation in education. Mr Perrin’s exceptional achievements extend beyond the classroom; he holds the record for the fastest team cycling time in the prestigious Race Across America and has earned three Gold medals in the Invictus Games.
Mr Chris Metcalfe (BSc, MSc, PGCE, QTS)
EcoMap Lead
With advanced studies from Swansea University and the University of Glasgow, Mr Metcalfe has specialised in researching the anthropogenic impacts on coral reef health. His work has taken him to diverse locations including the Seychelles, Egypt, and Sri Lanka, where he contributed to groundbreaking projects in reef conservation. Notably, Mr Metcalfe pioneered the use of computer-generated 3D mosaics as an innovative method for mapping reef communities, demonstrating his ability to merge technology with ecological research. His current research interests focus on nature restoration, reflecting his commitment to environmental conservation.
Dr Alan Bates (BSc, PhD)
Arduino Club Lead
With a background in physics from Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Bates has worked with tech giants Intel and AMD, and served as an advisor for Arduino’s educational products, demonstrating his ability to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications. His contributions to physics education are significant, having authored textbook chapters and served as an IB Physics moderator. Dr Bates’ research publications span both particle physics and physics education, reflecting his diverse interests. Currently, his research focuses on advancing STEM education through innovative approaches, particularly in lab-based learning and Arduino control systems.
Mr Tom Opie (BA, MA, QTS)
HYT Engineering Project Lead
Mr Opie is a dedicated educator with a background in industrial design and innovation, having studied at Sheffield Hallam University. He specialises in sustainable engineering projects and has developed expertise in 3D CAD design, which he applies to innovative solutions in technology and design. Passionate about fostering creativity and sustainability, Mr Opie actively engages pupils in hands-on projects that emphasise the importance of environmentally conscious engineering practices.
Dr Steve Simonivic
Head of Chemistry and Drinkable Rivers Lead
Dr Simonovic completed his MChem at the University of York, where he also pursued his PhD, focusing on the development of novel chiral catalysts using N-Heterocyclic carbenes as ligands in metal complexes. Following his academic pursuits, Dr Simonovic transitioned to industry, working as an organic chemist for Pfizer Ltd in early-stage drug research. Seeking to broaden his expertise further, Dr Simonovic then moved into the field of radiochemistry, supporting regulatory studies for Lifesystems Ltd. This multifaceted background in both academic research and industry applications makes Dr Simonovic a valuable asset to our research team, bringing a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to his work at Haileybury.
