fbpx Hockey - Haileybury

Hockey at Haileybury is one of the School’s greatest sports, with a long-established history and an excellent reputation.

We are always working hard to develop each pupil, whether boy or girl, and help them achieve new heights. In 2014 we were delighted to see two of our pupils, Lucy Price and Nick Page, gain selection for England U18 girls’ and boys’ teams respectively.

Season and Pre-season

Hockey training occurs all year round, with clubs and social hockey happening twice a week in the evenings. Girls compete in the Autumn term and have an extensive preseason in the summer term and a tour over the summer. Boys compete in the Spring term, with preseason throughout the autumn term. Indoor hockey occurs throughout the year with the peak of the season at the end of the Spring term.

Superb facilities

Haileybury boasts two all-weather astroturf pitches, situated next to the Sports Complex. Nun and Theobald Astros. Thanks to these wonderful pitches, we are able to host several of the East and County training camps, as well as the competition rounds of the U14/16/18 competitions as well as IAPS regionals and finals.

The school sports hall also offers two indoor hockey pitches with boards and goals.

Top-level training

We field 20 girls’ teams and 10 boys’ teams across the age groups.

An experienced coaching staff ensures that top-level training is provided, and fixtures are played every weekend in the Autumn and Easter term.

Regular opponents include schools such as The Leys, Felsted, Queenswood, King’s Canterbury, Merchant Taylor’s, Bishops Stortford, The Perse and St Albans.

Excellent coaching

Rob Schilling, Director of Hockey at Haileybury is a former American international. Mr Schilling is an inspirational coach who has played at the highest club and international level for many years, with over 100 caps for America and captaining the indoor team. He has won league titles with Birmingham University, Southgate, Sevenoaks and East Grinstead. He also holds a Pan American outdoor silver, gold and silver indoor and has played in the Indoor World Cup.

Mr Schilling has coached Southgate and Surbiton Men to promotion into the English Indoor Premier League as well as WPCC Ladies, in Cape Town, to top division victory and is now leading the Haileybury High Performance Programme. He is currently also Southgate Mens 1st XI assistant player/coach.
