Academic life in the Sixth Form at Haileybury centres around an ambitious, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating environment, where every young person is empowered to be inquisitive and open-minded.
As one of just a handful of UK schools offering a dual-curriculum model in the Sixth Form, Haileybury is proud to offer two distinct academic pathways: A levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programmes (IB).
Offering such choice and flexibility enables pupils to pursue their passions and gives full autonomy over their academic direction. Pupils are supported through these two vital years by a dedicated Sixth Form team, their house team, and a tutor who oversees their academic progress.

The A level pathway offers a focussed and investigative approach, allowing pupils to align their studies with their specific interests and future aspirations. Pupils typically choose three subjects, giving them the freedom to explore areas they excel in, become subject specialists and to go into real depth through independent study. Alongside A level subjects, pupils take part in the Academic Extension Programme (AEP) in Lower Sixth; a series of academic electives designed to complement and extend their A level choices.
The IB programme offers a globally recognised, broad academic pathway designed to nurture inquisitive, knowledgeable and caring young people who are prepared for today’s world. Pupils study six subjects across distinct disciplines - three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. These courses are complemented by the IB Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK) to develop critical thinking, an independent, university-style Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service projects (CAS).
