Coghill and Adventure Skills

At Haileybury, Coghill and Adventure Skills are more than just programmes; they are pathways to inspiration, self-discovery, and personal growth.

Coghill – Year 9

The Coghill programme, named in honour of Old Haileyburian and Victoria Cross recipient Nevill Coghill VC, is designed to ignite curiosity and a spirit of adventure in our Removes (Year 9) pupils.

Through engaging activities such as first aid, navigation, swimming survival, expedition skills and leadership challenges, we encourage pupils to step beyond their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. By fostering a sense of service, teamwork, and resilience, Coghill inspires pupils to develop confidence and empathy, empowering them to become proactive, compassionate leaders.

Adventure Skills – Year 10

The Adventure Skills programme, offered as an alternative to the Combined Cadet Force for Middles and Fifths (Years 10 and 11), continues this journey of inspiration. Pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves through mountain biking, canoeing, camp-craft, outdoor cooking, expeditions, climbing, and first aid. Our supportive environment and expert guidance inspire students to take on new challenges, develop a lifelong love of the outdoors, and discover strengths they never knew they had.

Through Coghill and Adventure Skills, Haileybury inspires every pupil to embrace adventure, cultivate vital life skills, and develop the character and confidence needed to thrive in their life beyond school.

There’s something almost magical about sending a group of teenagers into the great outdoors, away from Wi-Fi, homework, and the mysterious gravitational pull of their phone screens. Suddenly, the world opens up: they trade scrolling for scrambling up hills, group chats for campfire chats, and find that the fresh air actually does more than just mess up their hair. Outdoor programmes aren’t just a break from routine; they’re a confidence-boosting, mood-lifting, resilience-building factory, and a lot of fun along the way.
