Haileybury are National 4 x110m Hurdles Champions

Haileybury athletes enjoyed a successful day at the Achilles School Relays yesterday (2 May), a national event involving over 35 schools.

The biggest success of the day came in the first event, as our Senior 4 x 110m Hurdles team of Felix Sharman, Paul Zeisler, Eric Chu and Okemdi Chukwu won both their heat and final to take the title, despite a strong comeback on the last leg from Millfield in the final. Eric deserves particular congratulations as a Middles (Year 10) athlete in the senior age group team.

"As a rarely run event, the four boys can proudly say they current sit in 2nd place on the World Rankings and fastest team in the UK for 2013," accompanying member of staff Mr Richard Williams said.

"Other successes included 3rd place in the Inter 4 x 100m, where a better final handover may have resulted in a win (their heat run had implied). The 3rd place in the Inter 4 x 200m was a great run considering they lost Callum Scutt to injury and that it was Austin Winton and Myles-Jordan Senior-Campbell’s fourth race of the day! In addition, our B teams took the honour of fastest supporting teams in both events, beating the likes of Harrow B, St Paul’s B, Hampton B and Millfield B on times in the heats.

The Senior boys followed up their hurdles victory by finishing a creditable 4th in the 4 x 100m, with a crowd-pleasing run on the second leg from Matthew Morrison, taking 3-4 metres out of all the other teams.

Unfortunately, the Junior boys were unable to make the final in the 4 x 100m, despite a scintillating leg from Kayode Ariyo, and did not contest the 4 x 200m after an injury to Will Stibbs."
