Haileybury celebrates Women's History Month and International Women's Day

Celebrated across the globe, March is Women’s History Month, whilst Wednesday 8 March is ‘International Women’s Day’, the theme for which this year is #Embrace Equity.

In preparation for this, each boarding house has been invited to create a film drawing attention to a ‘hidden’ female figure from their HM’s specialism, who they felt was deserving of greater recognition for their achievements. Pupils have also been invited to participate in a Writing Competition requiring them to respond creatively to the South African proverb: “you strike the women, you strike the rock” ( ‘Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo’). We have had some inspiring and creative entries.

We are proud to be a school in which pupils are motivated to act as role models to their peers, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and challenging discrimination. Accordingly, this month, our Sixth Form pupils from the History Society and Gender Coalition will lead Lists, acknowledging the significant achievements of women throughout history and explaining the difference between equality and equity. Pupils will also deliver a series of themed Chapel Services, exploring the female experience in different countries, and there will be the opportunity to attend themed film nights.
