A major milestone for the global Haileybury Education Group

We are thrilled to mark a historic milestone as Haileybury Malta officially inaugurated its permanent campus in Mtarfa this weekend.

Following a €19 million investment, supported in part by the Malta Development Bank, the iconic former Royal Naval Hospital has been painstakingly transformed into a modern, sustainable international school.

The official ceremony was led by Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg and Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri, who praised the project for restoring a piece of local heritage while broadening high-quality educational choices in Malta.

Eugene du Toit, Master of Haileybury, and Maghin Tamilarasan, Director of Domestic & International Partnerships, were delighted to join the celebrations alongside Head of Campus Louise Salmond Smith, local dignitaries, Governors, pupils, parents and staff, underscoring the deep, enduring connection between our Haileybury and our Maltese partner campus.

From welcoming its first 50 pupils in temporary premises in September 2023, Haileybury Malta now enters an exciting new era. The Mtarfa campus fully unifies the Pre-Prep, Prep, and Senior Schools under one roof, while celebrating another milestone this year with the opening of its Nursery and Sixth Form, offering world-class education all the way through to university preparation.

As Head Louise Salmond Smith noted, the school brings together the best of British and Maltese educational standards. While the restored stone walls, state-of-the-art laboratories, and playing fields are remarkable, it is the founding families, dedicated staff, and inspiring pupils who have truly made this building a school.

Eugene du Toit, Master of Haileybury, commented: “This inspiring school is of strategic importance to Malta’s education system, putting the country firmly on the map internationally as part of the growing Haileybury Education Group. It is particularly satisfying to see a building that cared for people over many generations being restored to care for the next generations, nurturing the leaders, thinkers and doers of the future.

Maghin Tamilarasan, Director of Domestic & International Partnerships, added: “We are delighted to share in this moment with our esteemed partners. The shared vision and close association with Haileybury have resulted in the creation of a truly iconic school here in the heart of Malta.
