U13 Boys are County Hockey Champions
A fantastic display from the U13 Boys’ Hockey team on Friday (1 March) saw them crowned Hertfordshire Champions.
After a month of not having played together, the boys got off to a slow start and their first game, against Hitchin Boys’ School, ended in a goalless draw after a couple of crucial saves from goalkeeper Harry Rawlings. They were then pitched against home team Watford Grammar School and in the second half Ben Morris and Philip Wistow both scored; after their 2-0 victory the boys didn’t look back. John Warner were next taken apart as the Haileybury squad hammered home five goals in a little over ten minutes. Against St Albans they were leading comfortably (courtesy of two very tidy Ethan Webb finishes) when their opponents managed to equalise with a minute to go, but Yunoske Shimizu saved the day by slotting in a deciding goal seconds before the final whistle. A real nailbiter!
The final game against Aldenham brought out the boys’ fighting spirit. Although dominating play throughout the first half, after half-time their perseverance paid off and they were rewarded with three goals.
It was an impressive performance from all nine boys and a great achievement to win this trophy for the first time. Jasper Blundell, Luke Brace, Oliver Gibbard and James Pomfrett all played essential roles in the victory, helping to secure yet another trophy for display in Lower School.
We now wish them the best of luck for the Regional finals this Thursday (7 March)!
