Trevelyan

Trevelyan is the oldest of Haileybury’s Houses and provides a secure, enjoyable and productive setting in which all the boys can be part of a thriving community. We want each boy to develop their talents and abilities academically, socially and culturally. We also encourage respect for each other’s privacy and individuality, as well as offering support for others when the need arises.

George Seccombe Housemaster of Trevelyan

Meet the Housemaster

George Seccombe became Housemaster of Trevelyan in January 2019 after two and a half years as Assistant Housemaster as tutor to the Middles and Vths. He is married to Helen (a professional golfer) and they have two young sons, Harry and Charlie, and a very loyal springer spaniel called Reggie.

George joined Haileybury as Head of Geography in September 2014 having previously taught at The London Oratory School in Fulham and then at Shiplake College near Henley-on-Thames where he was Head of Geography for four years. George runs a number of Geography field trips including the annual Vths GCSE Geography to Iceland.

Away from Trevelyan and teaching, George is fully involved in the CCF as Officer in Command of the Army Section and Contingent 2ic and coaching rugby, cricket and football. The Seccombes enjoy spending their holidays at the family holiday home on the west Welsh coast where Reggie can run wild on the beach, the children can build sandcastles to their hearts content and George and Helen can do battle on the golf course.

House character

The Trevelyan ethos is to be happy yet purposeful, a House where the qualities of honesty, good humour, ambition, and respect for others are much in evidence. High moral standards and good behaviour are expected and part of the culture.

The boys are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves, respect others and become independent and confident – but at the same time tolerant and sensitive to others. The HM and Tutors work hard to help all the boys to achieve their academic best and to get involved in the wider opportunities available at Haileybury. Day to day pastoral care is promoted through tutoring and peer support.

Leadership and teamwork are fostered through increasing responsibility. In Trevelyan, boys are encouraged to have a strong sense of personal responsibility, leading to an increasing independence in their studies. The House also promotes healthy competition, and there are plenty of opportunities to represent Trevelyan in a wide range of activities – academic, sporting, cultural or co-curricular.

House facilities

Trevelyan was fully refurbished in 2018 to make it a welcoming, friendly, comfortable, modern place to live, work and socialise.

The dormitory for the Removes and Middles leads directly on to the HM’s house, whose door is – quite literally – always open, so every pupil has somewhere to turn when they need help or guidance on any subject.

History

Situated in the main quadrangle at the heart of Haileybury, Trevelyan is the oldest of all the Houses.

The House badge is a cross pattée gules (a red cross with “feet”), and its motto “Time Tryeth Troth” (‘Time Tests Patience’). House colours are red and black.

Tutors and HPA representative

George is supported in his work by an experienced team of Tutors at Trevelyan, in addition to a House Matron, Jennifer, who helps with the day to day domestic management of the House and is an immediate pastoral point of contact for both boys and parents. The House also has its own representative from the Haileybury Parents’ Association.
