Recently, our School marked Giving Week, which proved to be a testament to our pupils’ dedication and the generosity of our extended community. With the goal of raising £62,000 for Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT) and Hearts & Wings Holidays, our houses went above and beyond, ultimately collecting an impressive £64,280. This feat was made possible by the kindness of anonymous donors who matched every contribution made during the week. In order to reach this impressive target, pupils spearheaded in a variety of creative and energetic events, including runs, triathlons, bingo nights, raffles, photo booths and selling sweet treats across the week.

In late November, our pupils also demonstrated their community spirit by collecting 240 toys for the Hertford Pantry. This initiative will undoubtedly brighten Christmas morning for many children in our local community. Haileybury’s Community Action Volunteering (CAV) programme, available to Sixth Form pupils, further exemplifies our commitment to service. Through partnerships with organisations like Mudlarks Charity Cafe, Humanitas, and Drinkable Rivers, our pupils engage in activities that align with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, such as promoting healthy lives, clean water, and quality education.

Service is also about raising awareness for social causes. Initiatives like RedKite’s Red Bench campaign, which aims to raise awareness about domestic violence by placing red-painted benches in public locations—including our quad— serve as powerful examples. Such campaigns encourage conversations and advocate for systemic change.

Our pupil-led Charity Committee, which meets weekly, organises a range of fundraising events, from charity balls and doughnut sales to non-uniform days and teacher vs pupil competitions. These initiatives not only raise vital funds but also instil a sense of civic duty and empathy among our pupils. Haileybury’s commitment to service and community action is a shining example of the power of collective effort and generosity.

As we enter the season of giving, it is a timely reminder that, indeed, it is better to give than to receive. By nurturing a culture of service and volunteering, we are not only transforming the lives of others but also enriching our own.

Haileybury, one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent boarding and day schools, has launched a space programme – and is aiming to become the first school in Europe to launch a satellite. The space mission, led by pupils at Haileybury, has been set up in an exciting partnership with British multinational aerospace company, BAE Systems. 

The programme’s aim is to launch a mini satellite, known as CubeSat, into space. The pupils have chosen to install an optical camera inside, which will gather essential data from high above Earth on the impacts of global warming, including deforestation and wildfires. The intention is for this information to contribute to the worldwide efforts to protect the planet from climate change. 

Many schools have tried to launch a satellite into orbit since the 1990s, but none have succeeded to date. If Haileybury becomes the first to achieve this, its pupils will be placed at the forefront of space education in Europe. It will also create a model that schools around the world can use to provide similar opportunities for their pupils. 

There are more than 30 Haileybury pupils aged 12 to 18 involved in the project. It is not only enhancing their knowledge and application of subjects such as engineering and physics but more widely in project management. For example, pupils have established a management structure with committees focused on areas like finance, technical support, and communications to help ensure the programme’s success.

BAE Systems Digital Intelligence division has come on board to advise pupils. The organisation’s specialists will deliver insightful lectures at the School once a month and teach pupils about the technical aspects of the mission, from how to power their CubeSat using solar energy to providing guidance on satellite computing.

BAE Systems, through this work, hopes to inspire and cultivate the next generation of aerospace engineers and encourage more young people to enter a career in aerospace and associated fields.

So far, Haileybury pupils have created a 3D model, developed plans for the main build, and presented it to industry experts including representatives from the UK Space Agency. They are now working with BAE to bring their vision to life and secure a rocket to launch their CubeSat.

The commitment to groundbreaking research is embedded in Haileybury’s ethos. Alongside the CubeSat mission, the School has built a new Research Centre which is home to other international and pioneering research that pupils are a part of, including the prestigious Stan-X project. This partnership with scientists from Stanford University in the US involves a revolutionary study of genetics using fruit flies, contributing to efforts to find cures for diseases such as diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

The publication of the A level grades comes a few weeks after the publication of an equally outstanding set of IBDP grades. Indeed, when the A level and IBDP grades are combined, the 2024 Upper Sixth pupils achieved 63% A*/A grades (or the IBDP equivalent) and 89% A*- B grades (or the IBDP equivalent). These figures are also the strongest in a normal examination series in the School’s history.

The pupils in the year group deserve their success: they are able, committed to their studies and ambitious. Sustainability is a strategic priority at Haileybury and our community has been making strides towards reaching goals outlined in our Eco-Committee’s Action Plan, spanning biodiversity, carbon neutrality by 2030, environmental curriculum, waste reduction, transportation and more. Our marked progress is what inspired our School to apply for an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

Our pupil-led Eco-Committee has been instrumental in driving our sustainability initiatives. Through their passionate efforts, they have raised awareness about environmental issues and implemented impactful projects. The Environmental Review they conducted highlighted the positive changes already made and paved the way for future initiatives.

One of our standout achievements included a field trip to Grundon, where pupils learned about waste management firsthand. Additionally, our leadership in the inaugural sustainability conference ‘Youth Perspectives on Climate Change’ had a profound impact, inspiring pupils across our five international partner schools to take action. This Green Flag Award with Distinction not only validates our current efforts but also motivates us to continue our journey towards a sustainable future. Briony Marshall, an Oxford biochemistry graduate and Royal Society of Sculptors member, is known for artworks investigating scientific ideas and processes. Her public art makes complex concepts accessible to non-scientists while celebrating understanding for subject experts.

During her residency at Haileybury, she will be embedded in our science and technology department two days a week. With her workspace overlooking the new SciTech courtyard, pupils and staff will be encouraged to witness her creative process as she develops artworks for the state-of-the-art facilities. Marshall is already engaging Haileyburians in developing public art proposals, providing unique hands-on learning opportunities. Marshall’s artistic vision will be inspired by pioneering Haileybury research, including the Stan-X genetics research and cutting-edge curriculum.

“I’m thrilled as the Haileybury STEM artist in residence,” said Marshall. “The breadth of scientific research going on at this secondary school is both impressive and challenging. The prospect of working in this wonderful new building, being fully embedded in both the culture of the school and the aesthetics of the spaces, will enable me to develop works that really complement the activities and ambitions of science and technology at Haileybury.”

Marshall aims to complete her artworks by the Autumn term and we look forward to celebrating the unveiling and installation with our community next academic year.

One highlight was the lineup of six selected speakers who captivated attendees with insightful presentations on topics like cold nuclear fusion, a Russian ballet producer and genetically modified bacteria. The enthusiasm from pupils was remarkable. They eagerly presented projects, showcasing passion for learning and articulating complex ideas confidently—in part due to our School’s commitment to oracy.

Christopher Nolan, known for his groundbreaking work in directing and producing, added another feather to his cap by winning the Academy Award for Best Director for his latest blockbuster, Oppenheimer. With a career spanning decades, Nolan has consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling and visual effects in cinema. His unique style and visionary approach have earned him a dedicated global following and critical acclaim. In addition to Oppenheimer’s impressive 13 nominations and seven wins last evening, Nolan’s film has enjoyed an incredibly successful 2024 awards season, earning seven BAFTAs, five Golden Globes, three SAG Awards and a People’s Choice Award.

Perhaps one of the most unexpected moments from last evening’s Oscars happened at the press conference. Nolan was caught off guard when he fielded a question from fellow alumni and journalist Alison Boshoff nee Fleming (Allenby & Colvin, 1988). In their brief interaction, the OHs reminisced about their Haileybury history class.

There was another Haileyburian at the star-studded event. Alumna Suzi Battersby, a standout talent in the world of cinematic prosthetics design and makeup, transformed Dame Helen Mirren for the critically acclaimed film Golda, about the ‘Iron Lady of Israel’, Golda Meir. Suzi’s attention to detail and ability to bring characters to life through special-effects makeup is what earned her top recognition and the Oscar nod. Suzi is no newcomer, however. As the founder of RedGirl FX, she has worked on hits such as Killing Eve, Dr Who, Ted Lasso, Sex Education and Silo, to name a few. Receiving an Oscar nomination is a testament to her skill and passion for her craft.

“As my peers will perhaps remember, I wore my love of Drama on my sleeve trying to be involved with as many plays as possible in the lovely old Ayckbourn Theatre, taking LAMDA exams up to Gold Medal and even mucking around doing performances in our rooms at Allenby,” Suzi recently told The Haileybury Society.

Sisters Ella (Year 11, Lawrence) and Lyla (Year 9, Lawrence) took on the formidable challenge of Mount Kilimanjaro, not just for the thrill but for a cause close to their hearts. Their mission: to help save the endangered Arabian Sea humpback whales, leading them to raise over £10,000 for the Environment Society of Oman (ESO). 

Ella’s visit to Ras Al Jinz, Oman’s turtle beach is what sparked her passion for environmental sustainability and led the sisters to initially raise $5,000 USD for the ESO Turtle Research and Conservation efforts. Not only was witnessing an endangered species a catalyst for their sense of social responsibility, but both Haileyburians have long drawn inspiration from their paternal grandmother, who has dedicated her life to social work and welfare causes. This example of service is the reason Lyla has always donated her earnings and gifts to disadvantaged populations and why she received an award from the Near East South Asian Council for Overseas Schools (NESA) in 2022. 

It was their many trips to Tanzania where Mount Kilimanjaro loomed in their sights that inspired the pupils to tackle the climb and seek sponsorship in support of humpback whale conservation. With their mother Jesal by their side, Ella and Lyla meticulously prepared for over two months, packing equipment for all eventualities, and mentally and physically preparing to embark on the 8-day Lemosho trail. 

“The biggest challenge was summit day. Waking up at 11pm and steep climbing for 6 and a half hours, functioning on a slice of toast, with less than 5 minute breaks every hour was hard. Ultimately, it was very rewarding. Though these challenges were difficult to overcome, physically and mentally, I am an explorer at heart and I love to take on challenges. I learned to never give up and that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and if you have a whole community supporting you.” – Ella

The journey unveiled the stunning terrains of Afromontane forests, glacial valleys, and alpine deserts, however, it was not without challenges. From rapidly changing weather conditions to the mentally testing nature of ‘pole, pole’ (meaning ‘slowly, slowly’ in Swahili), to ensure proper acclimatisation to altitude. It was hot and wet during the day, and very cold during at night, making sleeping on the mountain especially tough. every step they took was a testament of their determination to make an impact.

Evenings on the mountain brought enlightening talks with fellow trekkers about the impacts of climate change, emphasising their mission’s importance and further fuelling the family’s impressive feat.

“The climb taught me resilience and the value of perseverance. As we eye future challenges, this journey’s lessons stay with us,” Lyla shared. Ella and Lyla’s journey is far from over as they continue to explore, push themselves and look to climb the next summit for an equally meaningful cause.
