We are delighted to confirm that Tom Wade has been appointed as Director of Digital Innovation and Enterprise at Haileybury.

This is a new role at the School and will see Tom becoming a member of the Executive Leadership Team. Tom will be responsible for the strategic evolution of Haileybury’s digital landscape and will play a central role in the development of the School’s Programme of Leadership and Enterprise.

Tom has led Haileybury’s digital strategy to its current maturity, with his vision being to ensure that the School not only reacts to technological shifts but actively shapes the educational landscape.

Tom is a pioneer in integrating AI into core strategy, achieving the Gold AI Quality Mark from the Good Future Foundation, an accreditation held by only three schools worldwide. Haileybury has also achieved Google Reference school status and is now an Apple Distinguished school. He has positioned Haileybury as a founding member of the Pedtech Partnership and has spoken at conferences such as ISTE in Texas and BETT in London. Tom is committed to anchoring innovation in rigorous safeguarding while equipping pupils with critical skills in ethical discernment, innovation and enterprise.

We are delighted to share that Haileybury SciTech has been shortlisted for a RIBA East Award.

Presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the RIBA East Awards celebrate the very best examples of architecture across the region, recognising buildings that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and design excellence.

At Haileybury, our ambition is to provide pupils with the very best facilities for all aspects of their education. Opened in 2024, the Science and Technology Centre has doubled the size of the School’s previous provision, featuring state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced IT suites, and dedicated robotics and design technology spaces. The building also includes twenty interconnected teaching and seminar rooms and an outdoor courtyard, creating an inspiring environment that encourages collaboration and innovation.

Haileybury SciTech is home to pioneering research, including the prestigious Stan-X project, a groundbreaking genetic study in partnership with Stanford University. Pupils work on university-level research that contributes to efforts to find cures for diseases such as diabetes and pancreatic cancer, a remarkable opportunity for young scientists.

Sustainability was at the heart of the design, with solar panels, green roofs, ground-source heat pumps and cross-laminated timber.

All shortlisted projects will be visited by the RIBA East Award judges ahead of the winners being announced at the ceremony in May.

It was a fantastic day for our VEX Robotics teams on Friday, with pupils competing at two regional events.

Our Metals teams headed to Stowe School, while two Plastics teams travelled to Colchester to take on strong opposition.

The two teams at Stowe dominated much of the day, remaining unbeaten through numerous rounds. Both progressed to the elimination stages with the Middles boys, Demitrios, Poyraz, James, Jasper, Seb and Freddy, delivering an exceptional performance to reach the final, narrowly losing to the top-ranked side. Their consistent progress suggests that it is only a matter of time before they secure their first tournament win.

Meanwhile in Colchester, the teams showcased their newly upgraded designs. Despite a few early challenges, the Removes team, Xander, Cariana, Grace and Tori, delivered an outstanding performance, remaining unbeaten to win the regional competition and qualify for the National Championships in March. A brilliant achievement and hopefully the first of many teams to reach this prestigious stage.

We are delighted to share that the Legends Tennis Centre has now joined Haileybury, further strengthening the role of tennis within our vibrant sporting community.

The Centre’s superb facilities include four indoor and four outdoor courts, all featuring a high-quality acrylic surface, similar to that used at the Australian Open. Pupils will therefore benefit from a true Grand Slam quality bounce as they train and compete.

Our new Director of Tennis, Francisco Ruiz Lopez, is driving the continued growth of tennis across the School, inspiring both increased participation and competitive success. He is now joined by the talented coaching team at Legends, bringing an exciting new depth of expertise and quality to our pupil tennis programme.

The tennis centre will also continue to have a community outlook, teaching the game to local children as well as housing an adult membership who play, train and compete locally as a club. Our goal is to both develop young players through the Legends community programme and attract young players into the School who will be able to compete internationally on the tennis stage.

Oscar’s journey with us began when he joined Haileybury from Melbourne, boarding in Kipling House where he quickly became known for his humility, composure and work ethic. His time at Haileybury was marked by a balanced commitment to both academic and athletic pursuits, with our supportive environment helping him to thrive on and off the track. 

In 2025, Oscar delivered a season of near-flawless drives, claiming multiple victories and finishing third in the Drivers’ Championship. This year has also seen him awarded ‘The Don Award’ – Australia’s most prestigious sporting honour. His achievements have brought immense pride to the entire Haileybury community, as we see in him the very best of what our school stands for – excellence, integrity and the courage to chase one’s dreams.​ 

Oscar Piastri is not just a sporting icon; he is an inspiration to current and future Haileyburians. His story reminds us that with dedication, support and the right environment, remarkable things are possible. This national accreditation recognises excellence in the thoughtful, responsible and impactful use of AI in schools and we are extremely proud to be among its recipients.

During the assessment process, the Foundation commended Haileybury for our research-driven and forward-thinking strategy. They highlighted the clarity of our vision for why AI matters in education and how it connects to our curriculum, our teaching and learning practices, our approach to digital wellbeing and literacy, and the skills young people will need for the future world of work.

We were particularly pleased that the assessors recognised the strength of our governance and review processes, as well as our commitment to adapting and refining our approach as this fast-moving field develops. At Haileybury, AI is not treated as an isolated tool but is thoughtfully integrated into wider digital innovation and subject planning, always with the aim of enhancing pupils’ learning and supporting staff.

Haileybury is celebrating an excellent outcome in its recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, carried out in October 2025.

 The school met all standards under the inspection framework, and its academic and co-curricular enrichment programme was recognised as a significant strength, confirming the breadth and quality of the opportunities available to pupils.

The inspection covered every aspect of school life, including the quality of education, pastoral care and wellbeing, extra-curricular provision, pupils’ personal development, accommodation, health and safety, governance and leadership. Inspectors noted that this strong performance reflects the high quality of Haileybury’s provision and the rich experiences open to every pupil.

Motivated, ambitious and resilient pupils

The report placed particular emphasis on the pupils themselves, praising them as “motivated learners who engage productively with academic challenge.” It highlighted that pupils “demonstrate ambition, confidence and resilience,” qualities that underpin their success both in and beyond the classroom.

Inspectors also commended the school’s ethos, noting that “the school’s ethos centres around the values of respect, inclusion and mutual understanding.” This culture, they observed, supports positive relationships across the community and helps pupils to thrive academically, socially and personally.

Academic excellence and enrichment

In its key findings on academic and other achievements, the report described Haileybury’s curriculum as “broad and balanced, offering pupils a wide range of academic and creative opportunities.” Teachers were recognised as “enthusiastic” and praised for using strong subject knowledge to plan well-structured lessons that engage and challenge pupils.

The school’s enrichment offer was singled out for particular praise. Inspectors noted that “the school provides pupils with an array of opportunities for academic enrichment, such as collaboration with international universities on genetic mutation, sending satellites into space and developing robots for entry into a global competition.” They also highlighted that leaders have “integrated a programme of relevant educational visits for pupils, both locally and internationally, that enriches the curriculum.”

Personal development, community and co-curricular life

The inspection confirmed that pupils’ personal development is a key strength of Haileybury. The report states that “pupils behave well and take ownership of their actions” and that they benefit from “many opportunities for outdoor activity, including sport,” ensuring that “there are pursuits and experiences for everyone.”

Social and cultural awareness were also praised. Inspectors reported that “pupils’ social and cultural awareness is enriched through community service, charity work and cultural events,” adding that pupils “volunteer to help others, show compassion and develop curiosity about the wider world.” This reflects the school’s commitment to forming well-rounded young people who contribute positively to their communities.

Co-curricular programme a ‘significant strength’

Haileybury’s extensive co-curricular and enrichment programme was a standout feature of the report. Inspectors concluded that “the co-curricular and academic enrichment programme is a significant strength of the school,” emphasising that it is “extensive and inclusive, providing for a wide range of pupils’ interests and for all performance levels.”

The programme spans “an array of sports, outdoor education, which includes adventurous activity, drama, music and university-level research,” ensuring that pupils can develop their talents, discover new interests and challenge themselves in a supportive environment. This recognition from the ISI affirms Haileybury’s strategic focus on providing a holistic education that balances academic rigour with breadth of experience.

Haileybury’s brand-new Outdoor Education Area was officially opened this week, marking an exciting milestone for our school community and the continued growth of our Outdoor Adventure programme.

Set within the beautiful surroundings of Hailey Wood, the new space has been thoughtfully designed to encourage exploration, creativity, teamwork and a deeper connection with the natural world.

To mark the occasion, Lower School pupils led the celebrations with a day of hands-on discovery and outdoor fun. From den building and fire lighting to cooking hot chocolate on Kelly kettles, pupils threw themselves into every challenge with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Guests were welcomed by the Master and the Deputy Head (Co-curricular), who spoke about the exciting opportunities the new Outdoor Education Area will offer. The space will serve as a hub for outdoor learning, adventure and wellbeing and will assist pupils in building confidence, resilience and leadership skills beyond the classroom.

The celebrations came to a close with a lunch served in the outdoor kitchen, where pupils, guests and staff gathered to enjoy the delicious food right in the heart of Hailey Wood.
