During October half-term, Haileybury pupils had the privilege of spending two days at one of CITC’s partner schools in Nepal, gaining insight into lessons, culture and the challenges surrounding girls’ education. Building on this experience, Dawa Geljen Sherpa (CITC founder), Dave Thomas (trustee and trip leader) and Mike Hagen (Chair) visited our school this week, where they were hosted by Lower Sixths pupils Adam and Hailey, who had been on the trip

CITC supports 15 schools in Nepal, focusing on promoting female education through teacher training and addressing barriers such as menstrual health and discrimination. The visit also provided an opportunity to thank the Haileybury community for its fundraising support, with exciting potential for future collaboration.

Haileybury’s Boys’ XI produced a superb performance to secure a memorable victory away at Harrow today.

Harrow set a competitive 173–4 from their 20 overs, with Kai (L6) and Conway (U6) impressing with disciplined bowling. In reply, James (L6) delivered a truly outstanding innings, smashing a magnificent 105 from just 56 balls, including eight sixes. His commanding display set the tone for an exciting chase.

A late rain delay added to the drama, leaving Haileybury needing 10 from the final over. Tommy (U6) rose to the occasion with a crucial six, and, alongside Aaron (Vths), held their nerve to seal a thrilling win off the very last ball.

A fantastic team effort, highlighted by some exceptional individual performances.

We were incredibly honoured to welcome a prominent delegation from Google for Education, led by Ben Gomes, Google’s Chief Technologist for Learning and Sustainability, to Haileybury today.

The visit was prompted by Google’s interest in our trailblazing approach to digital and AI-integrated education.

• Director of Digital Innovation and Enterprise, Tom Wade, kicked off the day by detailing our philosophy of using technology to enhance learning.
• We discussed our curriculum focus on practical AI literacy, enabling pupils from Year 9 (Removes) and upwards to utilise tools like Gemini and NotebookLM responsibly for academic research.
• The delegation also gained direct access to the pupil perspective through a focused AI discussion group and saw our blended learning model in action by observing Digital Innovations and other academic classes.

The day concluded with high-level discussions with the Master and Director of Teaching and Learning during a productive roundtable.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase how we are shaping the future of learning, ensuring our pupils are prepared to engage with technology ethically and effectively.

Wednesday saw a busy and successful afternoon of county tennis, as our teams competed in the Herts U14 and U18 County Schools’ competition.

Edoardo (L6, Edmonstone) and Carlo (L6, Kipling) enjoyed a standout result, winning the Plate Competition, after edging past Chancellor’s in a tightly contested final.

There was further success against New Hall School, where our U18 girls’ and boys’ tennis teams both won matches. Adam and James (both L6, Bartle Frere) won two rounds before being edged out by the eventual finalists. Julius (L6, Edmonstone) and Tim (Middles, Edmonstone) also impressed, winning a round of their own.

There was also some excellent play in the younger age groups from the Boys’ U15 tennis teams and Girls’ U14 teams.

This year’s selection process has been both rigorous and highly considered, with decisions informed by input from Sixth Form pupils and staff, alongside extensive consultation with Housemasters, Housemistresses, and senior leaders. The strength and depth of applications were exceptional, with many more candidates than places available, making the final decisions particularly challenging.

It has been a great week for Haileybury pupils in sports again, with outstanding performances across athletics, cricket, rugby and golf.

Lower School 2 pupil Blake set a new U16 girls’ high jump record with a superb leap of 1.49m at the U15 County Heptathlon Championships. Blake finished second overall and has qualified for the Regional Finals in May. Her performance also included strong showings across the long jump, hurdles, shot put and 800m.

Meanwhile, James (L6) enjoyed a spectacular start to the cricket season, scoring an unbeaten 156 from just 83 balls in the first round of the National U17 Cup. His innings included four sixes and 21 fours, and helped set up the team’s progress to the next round where they will face Brentwood.

There was further cricket success for Ben (U6) who earned a place on the honours board with a superb five-wicket haul, taking 5/21 in the 1st XI’s all-day victory over Haberdashers on Saturday. He followed this up in style on Tuesday, scoring a blistering 88 from 44 balls in the 1st XI T20 against Tonbridge. Haileybury posted 270/5, with Tonbridge dismissed for 142 in reply.

Omar (Middles) had a tremendous week. Not only did he contribute a superb unbeaten 83 from just 29 balls in a devastating team batting display, he has also been selected for the Bunbury competition, a prestigious festival which brings together the top 48 cricketers in the country. This is quite an achievement and he is the first player since our current 1st XI captain Leo (U6, Thomason) to have been selected for it.

In rugby news, we are delighted to announce that Will (Vths) has earned a call-up to the Wales U17 training camp this May, marking an exciting step forward in his development on the international stage.

Finally, congratulations are in order for Rohit (L6) who has achieved outstanding sporting success, placing among the top three qualifiers for the Sky Sports Junior European Golf Open Finals in Spain. This follows an excellent round of 77 over the weekend, securing his place on the international stage. A superb achievement and we wish him every success in the Finals.

Tom Wade, the Director of Digital Innovation and Enterprise, presented the key findings of the Report, curated in conjunction with Dr Aubrey-Smith, to an exclusive audience of national policy makers and industry leaders, including representatives from the Department for Education, Ofqual, Pearson, and Goodnotes. Haileybury was incredibly proud to present the impact of a pedagogy-first approach to integrating digital technology into educational settings.

Haileybury is an Apple Distinguished School and continues to promote a blended approach to learning through supporting our pupils through academic excellence and promoting intellectual curiosity.

Earth Day is year-round at Haileybury, with pupils able to choose sustainability and community action projects alongside their academic curriculum.

We are thrilled to share that Haileybury was recently featured as hub in the spotlight by Drinkable Rivers, an inspiring initiative to which our pupils actively participate.

In the interview, Dr Stevan Simonovic, Teacher of Chemistry at Haileybury, discussed the dynamic range of socially and environmentally focused projects that form a rotating roster for our pupils. For example, some days, they head to a garden allotment in Hertford Heath to connect with nature; others involve spending time at a local care home, fostering intergenerational bonds; and on different occasions, they learn sign language to promote inclusivity.

Our pupils are also gearing up for exciting sustainability efforts, including plans to achieve the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. This internationally recognised accreditation celebrates young people’s meaningful environmental actions and underscores Haileybury’s commitment to fostering responsible global citizens.

Well done to Dr Simonovic and our dedicated pupils for their ongoing contributions to these vital community and environmental projects!

Our Lower School pupils enjoyed an action-packed Easter adventure in Sicily, filled with exploration, challenge and plenty of fun.

From the outset, the trip was full of unforgettable moments. Pupils climbed the mighty Mount Etna, travelling by coach, 4×4 and snowcat before trekking on foot to an incredible 2,900 metres, with plenty of snow, wind and breathtaking views along the way. They also hiked across dramatic lava fields, discovering the fascinating science behind volcanic landscapes.

There was no shortage of excitement, from river trekking through the Alcantara Gorge, jumping, sliding and splashing through canyons, to snorkelling in the clear waters of a volcanic marine reserve. A visit to the island of Vulcano brought pupils close to steaming sulphur vents and powerful reminders of past eruptions.

Cultural highlights included exploring the historic town of Taormina and its stunning ancient theatre, as well as learning the art of pizza-making with local experts. With time for beaches, cafés, ice cream and delicious Sicilian food, it was a truly memorable trip, full of adventure, laughter and new experiences.
