Our Lower School pupils enjoyed an action-packed Easter adventure in Sicily, filled with exploration, challenge and plenty of fun.

From the outset, the trip was full of unforgettable moments. Pupils climbed the mighty Mount Etna, travelling by coach, 4×4 and snowcat before trekking on foot to an incredible 2,900 metres, with plenty of snow, wind and breathtaking views along the way. They also hiked across dramatic lava fields, discovering the fascinating science behind volcanic landscapes.

There was no shortage of excitement, from river trekking through the Alcantara Gorge, jumping, sliding and splashing through canyons, to snorkelling in the clear waters of a volcanic marine reserve. A visit to the island of Vulcano brought pupils close to steaming sulphur vents and powerful reminders of past eruptions.

Cultural highlights included exploring the historic town of Taormina and its stunning ancient theatre, as well as learning the art of pizza-making with local experts. With time for beaches, cafés, ice cream and delicious Sicilian food, it was a truly memorable trip, full of adventure, laughter and new experiences.

Over the Christmas break, Haileybury pupils took part in two exciting overseas sports tours, combining intensive training with valuable cultural experiences.

Netball Teams in Barbados:

Two Haileybury netball teams, one U14 and one U16, travelled to Barbados for a tour that offered outstanding opportunities for sporting development and cultural enrichment.

Across eight competitive fixtures, the teams recorded seven wins, adapting impressively to the fast-paced and physical Bajan style of play. A particular highlight was an inspiring coaching session led by former Barbados National Coach Denise Alleyne, which encouraged the girls to refine their technical and tactical understanding.

Beyond the court, the players explored the island, enjoyed a taste of Caribbean culture and some well-earned sunshine, and represented Haileybury with enthusiasm and team spirit throughout.

Senior Boys Hockey in Barcelona:

Meanwhile, the senior boys’ hockey squad travelled to Barcelona for a three-night pre-season tour, preparing for the upcoming term through a series of high-quality training sessions at the prestigious Polo Club.

The team secured a 6–4 victory against local side Linia 22 in a match played at a stadium originally used for the Olympic Games, an experience that will live long in the memory. The boys also enjoyed sightseeing time in the city, visiting the Sagrada Familia, Olympic Park, and the Gothic Quarter.

The tour provided the perfect start to the season, and we look forward to seeing the squad build on their progress in the matches ahead.

Over the half-term break, Haileybury pupils set off on three extraordinary adventures, from the soaring peaks of the Himalayas to the glaciers of Iceland and the sunshine of Lanzarote.

Each experience offered challenge, discovery and connection, reflecting the spirit of curiosity and courage that drives Haileybury learning beyond the classroom.

Sixth Form Expedition to Nepal

Twenty-two Sixth Formers embarked on an unforgettable expedition to Nepal, beginning in the vibrant city of Kathmandu where clear skies revealed a rare glimpse of the Himalayas. The group trekked for six days through forests, mountain passes and terraced farmland, culminating in a sunrise ascent of Pikey Peak at 4,066 metres, with breathtaking views of Everest.

Staying in small teahouses and welcomed by local communities, pupils gained powerful insight into rural life where people live simply and sustainably. A highlight was the visit to Shree Garma School, supported by the charity Classroom in the Clouds, where pupils were warmly hosted by students who returned during their holidays to greet them. Together they shared presentations, dance and games, forging lasting friendships and a deeper appreciation of cultural exchange.

Exploring the Land of Ice and Fire

Meanwhile, our Middles geographers travelled to Iceland for an awe-inspiring field trip exploring one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. Their journey took them from Reykjavik to the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Golden Circle and the South Coast, where they hiked to the Sólheimajökull glacier and stood on the boundary between two continents.

Pupils experienced the raw power of nature through geothermal springs, waterfalls and lava fields, soaking in the Secret Lagoon and witnessing newly formed lava flow. Every stop brought home the incredible interplay between geography, environment and culture, leaving lasting memories of exploration and wonder.

Sun, Sea and Swim Training in Lanzarote

At the same time, Haileybury’s swimming squad headed to Lanzarote for an intensive training camp under clear blue skies. Over the course of the week, the team completed more than 12.5 kilometres in an Olympic-sized pool, perfecting technique and building endurance — all while enjoying the camaraderie of a shared sporting goal.

Away from the lanes, pupils explored Timanfaya National Park’s striking volcanic landscapes, experienced a camel ride, and enjoyed some well-earned relaxation on the beach and in Costa Teguise. It was a week of hard work, sunshine and team spirit that strengthened both skills and friendships.

These three remarkable journeys, spanning continents and disciplines, reflect Haileybury’s commitment to adventurous learning, collaboration and discovery. Whether trekking mountain paths, diving into icy wonderlands or training beneath the Lanzarote sun, our pupils continue to embrace the world with curiosity and courage.

Over the summer, an impressive 192 pupils immersed themselves in eight extraordinary school trips, venturing across Europe and Africa for adventure, learning, and unforgettable memories.

Each trip offered pupils a chance to discover new cultures, challenge themselves, and build lasting friendships through a mix of history, sport, language, and conservation.

Sporting Success and Team Spirit

York Cricket Festival: Pupils ended the season in high spirits, participating in the much-loved cricket festival hosted by St Peter’s, York, where teamwork and sporting excellence were celebrated.

Jersey Cricket Tour: The annual cricket tour saw matches against local teams and plenty of team bonding – including fun on the beautiful beaches of Jersey.

Preseason Hockey Tour to Eindhoven: Hockey players sharpened their skills with intensive training and friendly fixtures in Holland, bonding ahead of their busy season.

South Africa Rugby Tour:
The South Africa Rugby Tour was an unforgettable adventure, both on and off the field. The tour kicked off with an electric Friday night fixture against the Harlequins, and went on to include victories over Edgemead High and others. Off the pitch, pupils explored the Cape Canopy Tour, climbed Table Mountain, embarked on game drives to see South Africa’s wildlife, and embraced local culture at a traditional Braai. Visits to significant sites like the apartheid museum and community outreach activities rounded out a trip that built resilience, unity, and global understanding.

Duke of Edinburgh Qualifier Expeditions

Two groups undertook Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expeditions this summer. The Silver Qualifier took place in the stunning Peak District, where pupils completed rigorous training, planned their routes, and journeyed for three days and two nights, developing teamwork, navigation skills, and resilience. Meanwhile, the Gold Qualifier expedition challenged another group over four days and three nights in the scenic Brecon Beacons, further honing their leadership and endurance while embracing the majestic Welsh landscape.

Madagascar Conservation Expedition

A group of intrepid pupils traveled to Madagascar for a unique expedition in one of the world’s most biodiverse locations. Trekking through the Mahamavo forest, pupils conducted wildlife surveys by day (and night!), spotting lemurs, chameleons, and much more. Pupils worked with scientists and researchers, contributed to coral reef studies, and many earned their SSI Open Water Dive Certification to support marine research. Cultural experiences abounded, from Malagasy language workshops to local dance competitions around the campfire. The adventure ended in spectacular fashion, snorkelling alongside hawksbill turtles in the protected waters of Nosy Be.

A Summer of Growth and Connection

Across all trips, pupils embraced new skills, deepened global awareness, and created cherished memories. Whether hiking in Wales, chasing victory in sport, or supporting conservation in Madagascar, each journey captured the spirit of adventure, friendship, and discovery that make these school trips so special.

This summer, a group of Haileybury pupils embarked on an unforgettable expedition to one of the most unique and biodiverse regions on Earth: Madagascar.

The trip was a huge success, and both pupils and staff returned home with incredible memories, new skills, and a deeper appreciation for conservation and culture.

The adventure began with a thrilling 4×4 drive through the palm savannah en route to the Mahamavo forest research site. Pupils embraced daily treks to survey a remarkable variety of endemic species, and even braved challenging night surveys in dense forest to observe very active lemurs, chameleons, geckos, snakes, and spiders up close.

Pupils enjoyed working alongside passionate scientists and PhD students who were conducting their projects on the same research site and who shared their expertise in scientific research methods with them.

On the second part of the trip, pupils gained hands-on experience contributing to conservation projects by surveying some of the incredible Madagascan coral reefs for research databases. To do so, several pupils learnt to scuba dive and achieved their SSI Open Water Dive Certification under the excellent instruction of Scuba Nosy Be dive centre.

Cultural immersion was also an essential part of the adventure. Pupils learnt about Madagascar’s fascinating history and traditions through an interactive lecture and workshop programme. The fun Malagasy language workshops and competitions led by locals from the Sakalava tribe even had Mr Metcalfe gamely dancing around the campfire after his team lost a lively competition!

The expedition ended on a truly unforgettable note: snorkelling with hawksbill turtles in the Nosy Be protected marine area on the final day – an incredibly magical experience for everyone!

The trip, which catered to all abilities from complete beginners to seasoned skiers, was a resounding success, leaving everyone with unforgettable memories of fun, friendship, and snowy slopes.

The group stayed at the welcoming Hotel Jam Session, located conveniently at the foot of the slopes. With its ski-in, ski-out access, pupils could step straight onto the snow each morning and return effortlessly after their lessons. The hotel’s cosy atmosphere and delicious Italian cuisine provided the perfect setting for relaxation after action-packed days on the mountain.

Each day began with hearty breakfasts to fuel the pupils for their ski lessons which took place in the morning and in the afternoon. Grouped by ability levels, everyone had the chance to improve their skills under the guidance of expert instructors.

The fun didn’t stop when the skiing ended! Evenings were filled with a variety of activities both at the hotel and in the charming village of Les Deux Alpes. From games night and quizzes to Laser Tag, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The trip was more than just a skiing holiday—it was an opportunity for pupils to bond with friends, challenge themselves, and create lasting memories. From conquering new skiing skills to enjoying hot chocolate with friends after a day on the slopes, every moment was cherished.

A big thank you goes out to the staff who organised and supervised the trip, making it such a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved. Here’s to many more adventures in the future!

During the February half-term, a group of enthusiastic cadets embarked on the CCF Ski Trip to the picturesque Allgäu region of Bavaria, Germany.

The trip was an unforgettable experience for all involved. The cadets, who were completing their Alpine Ski Foundation course, spent their days honing their skiing skills on the slopes of Balderschwang, a resort renowned for its snow reliability and diverse range of trails.

Under the guidance of fully qualified cadet ski instructors, they enjoyed the perfect blend of learning and fun, and were all awarded their Snowlife Award Level 5.

Off the slopes, the group stayed in cosy bunkhouse-style accommodation, where they took turns preparing meals with assistance from CCF staff. Evening activities included engaging theory lessons, lively board games, and a visit to the local swimming pool.

A group of 40 dedicated cricketers, comprising two boys’ teams and one girls’ team, set off on a remarkable journey through Sri Lanka, facing a complete shift in climate and playing conditions.

Despite the challenges, the teams performed exceptionally well, securing an even balance of wins and losses while applying the skills they had developed during winter training.

Standout performances included Benji (90), James (93* & 50), Charlie (65), Isla R (51 & 63*), Louis (4–39), Chloe (3–19), Darcey
(3–22), Fin (3–15), and Tommy (3–22), all showcasing their talent and determination on the pitch.

Beyond cricket, pupils immersed themselves in Sri Lanka’s rich culture, exploring Galle and Colombo, visiting a turtle hatchery, and experiencing the wonders of an elephant sanctuary. It was a trip filled with growth, camaraderie, and lifelong memories – one that will surely not be forgotten.

The group began with a fascinating walking tour of Manhattan, followed by an evening on Broadway to see Back To The Future: The Musical, which was a real highlight.

The next morning, the pupils participated in a workshop with a cast member and the show’s musical director, engaging fully and enjoying the chance to learn from industry professionals.

The pupils also went ice-skating in Central Park, admired the stunning views from the Top of the Rock, and marvelled at the Manhattan Bridge at golden hour.

There were plenty of tired feet by the end, but the trip left everyone inspired and full of fond memories of New York’s incredible energy and creativity.

The conference kicked off with a warm welcome from Professor Seung Kim of Stanford University, a key partner in the Stan-X programme. Our pupils eagerly participated in a range of activities, including advanced lessons, academic poster planning and creation, and genetic challenge tasks. Haileyburians also attended insightful lectures on the Stan-X programme, geared towards their understanding of this pioneering study of genetics.

Beyond the academic sessions, the trip offered our pupils a unique opportunity to tour Princeton University and its renowned fruit fly laboratory, part of the Neuroscience Department. This first-hand experience provided invaluable insights into cutting-edge research facilities and the world of scientific exploration. After two intense academic days, our pupils had the chance to enjoy an in-weekend as part of Stephens Boarding House in Lawrenceville, immersing themselves in the vibrant campus life.

To cap off their extraordinary journey, the pupils ventured into the heart of New York City. Highlights included marvelling at the iconic skyline from The Summit at One Vanderbilt, visiting the Statue of Liberty, and reflecting on the global impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the memorial and museum.

Throughout this remarkable experience, our Haileybury pupils served as exemplary ambassadors for the school, demonstrating exceptional maturity and a thirst for knowledge. Their participation in the international fly conference not only enriched their academic pursuits but also fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and global perspectives.

After making it across the Atlantic, our pupils didn’t wast any time exploring the concrete jungle. The experience began with a guided walking tour through the streets of Manhattan, followed by the first of the group’s inspirational theatre productions. As the sun set on day one, our thespians struck a pose by the Brooklyn Bridge to capture the memories against the backdrop of the city skyline.

The following day, Haileyburians were treated to a masterful workshop led by a a star from the renowned Chicago musical. The School cast practised choreography and the distinct slinky movements from the roaring 20s. After all that excitement, pupils took a stroll through the iconic Central Park which paved the way for spectacular views from the top of the Rockefeller Center—a spot many stars have graced before them.

The adventure continued with a morning of shopping and cultural exploration in Greenwich Village, Soho and Canal Street. In the evening, pupils dined in Little Italy which fuelled them for an unforgettable night on Broadway, where they were swept away by more dazzling performances. To top it all off, our pupils were treated to a post-show photo with Chicago triple-threat, James T. Lane.

Haileybury was awarded two chairing positions in the Disarmament and International Security Committee, which were represented by Lower Sixth pupils Emily and Lucy (pictured). Proudly, their chairing proved to be some of the strongest at the conference. The pair managed a fruitful debate on the topic of the illicit arms trade. Emily and Lucy will be continuing their chairing roles—as Head Chairs of the Conference Special Committee and the Ecology and Environment Committee respectfully—at the Haileybury MUN 2024 conference this March.

Special mentions go to Lower School 1 (Year 7) pupil Charlotte, who demonstrated growing confidence in her Human Rights Committee, representing Saudi Arabia on the topic of the Rohingya crisis; along with Oleg, Georgie, and Jemima in the Environment Committee, and Charlie representing Brazil in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee.

The Benenden MUN Conference acted as a great warm up for upcoming January debates at Wycombe Abbey School and The Hague International Conference. Preparations are well underway for Haileybury’s own conference in March, which is the largest and most popular in the United Kingdom with over 800 attendees and staff.
