Tax-efficient and overseas giving

Tax-efficient and overseas giving

Haileybury is a registered charity (charity number 310013) which offers donors a variety of financial advantages.

Tax-efficient and overseas giving

Gift Aid

Under the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Gift Aid rules, if you are a UK tax payer, Haileybury is able to claim back the basic rate of tax paid on all donations. If you sign a Gift Aid declaration we will receive an additional 25p for every £1 that you give, without it costing you a penny more. In addition, if you pay tax at the higher or additional rate, you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and the basic rate on your donation.

We appreciate that tax has its complexities and can be difficult to understand. For more information about Gift Aid please click on the link below or for full HMRC details of the Gift Aid scheme please click on the link at the bottom of the page.

Donating land, property or shares

You don’t have to pay tax on land, property or shares you donate to Haileybury. This includes selling them for less than their market value.

Capital Gains Tax relief

You don’t have to pay Capital Gains Tax on land, property or shares you give to Haileybury. You may have to pay if you sell them for more than they cost you but less than their market value.

Leaving a gift in your Will

If you choose to leave a legacy to Haileybury, any such bequest will be free from Inheritance Tax.

Giving from overseas

If you are a non-UK resident you can make a gift by bank transfer by contacting Gavin Mann, Director of Development on 01992 706447.

The rules governing gifts from overseas residents have now been relaxed, so gifts can be made in a tax-efficient way. As an overseas resident you will qualify for tax relief provided you have income or capital gains charged to the UK tax authorities that are at least equal to the gross amount of your donation.

Haileybury is an educational institution which supports the British Schools and Universities Foundation (BSUF). The BSUF is a charitable foundation recognised by the US Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and is a tax-efficient way of giving. This means that United States taxpayers can make tax deductible contributions of cash, securities, charitable trusts, testamentary trusts or individual retirement accounts, expressing a preference for grants in support of Haileybury. The BSUF then disburses these grants without charging fees or commission.

For further information on the BSUF and to download a Donor Transmittal Form please click on the links at the bottom of the page. Once completed, please send your gift direct to the BSUF. They will send us prompt acknowledgement of your donation so we can thank you and your gift will then be passed from the BSUF to Haileybury in British Pounds Sterling.

Thank you.
