Reigate Model United Nations win for Haileybury

A Model United Nations delegation from Haileybury last weekend beat nearly 50 other schools to win the Reigate Model United Nations Conference held at Reigate Grammar School. In addition, pupil Will Taylor won Highly Commended Delegate while Ben Rowe, Pete Gillespie and Dan Kimpton won Outstanding Delegates awards.

MUN is a long-standing, successful extra-mural activity at Haileybury but of the four major gatherings on the annual calendar, this is the only one the independent school had not yet won. Teacher in charge, Jennifer Cranch, says the pupils are thrilled that they can now boast a full house of wins.

The delegation represented Mexico at the gathering and had to research information for committees on politics, human rights, disarmament, the environment, economic and development issues, and the Social and Security Councils. Topics that were debated during the day included children’s rights, the advancement of women, torture, freedom of speech, landmines, arms sales, energy resources, the Johannesburg Summit, deforestation, Zimbabwe, terrorism, international policing, control of multi-national companies, globalisation, genetic engineering, HIV/AIDS, euthanasia, abortion, peace keeping, and issues focusing on the Middle East and Iraq.

"The debates were good preparation for the next MUN gathering – Royal Russell MUN in Croydon over half term," adds Miss Cranch.

The delegation from Haileybury comprised Ben Rowe, Dan Kimpton, Pete Gillespie, Rob Millar and Will Taylor, who stepped in at the last minute after only beginning MUN two weeks ago and was also named Ambassador for the day.
