Over £800 raised for Philippines typhoon victims

On 8 November this year, a typhoon hit the East Coast of the Philippines, a disaster that left over 2,000 people dead and around half a million displaced and homeless. Sarah Jowett, Head of House in Hailey, reports on how Haileyburians sprang into action to help:

The news affected Hailey boarding House deeply due to its international boarder population and a Tutor having family in the affected area. The House as a whole decided to attempt to raise £200 for the Save the Children fund, a campaign spearheaded by Upper Sixth-Former Natalie Tyrwhitt-Drake. Natalie spoke eloquently in Chapel the next day, outlining the House’s plan: sweet sales in The Half, selling refreshments at the school performances of Grease and a busking event featuring Haileybury’s up and coming musical talent in the Grubber.

The whole of Hailey House really threw themselves into the tasks, bagging sweets, baking cakes and organising the events in an extremely short time, and their dedication ensured the events went off without a hitch. This was due in no small part to the help of the Hailey tutor team, Housemistress Mrs Baker and Lower-Sixth Tutor Miss Simou, and through their guidance Hailey managed to raise £800 over just three days. This will help to provide the children of the Philippines with clean water and shelter from the elements, far surpassing our original target.

Hailey would like to thank all those who contributed to their fund-raising efforts and hope their money has made a difference in alleviating the suffering of those still affected by the typhoon.
