Second All-Weather Surface in Action

Our second all-weather surface was completed during the Spring Term, adding to Haileybury's already extensive sports facilities and allowing us to offer arguably the best hockey facilties in Hertfordshire. The second all-weather surface (AWS) is adjacent to our original AWS, enabling easy transition between pitches during tournaments and doubling the access our pupils have for both academic and co-curricular sport. Festival of Arts Exhibition Monday 3 - Saturday 15 June 2013 We are delighted that so many prep and primary schools have entered the Art and Creative Competitions for our annual Festival of Arts. Haileybury teachers Charlotte Orford, Head of Art, and English teacher Nigel Parkin have begun the process of judging the hundreds of entries and have been impressed by the high quality of pupils' work. Lower School 2 Day in the Workplace

As an initial step in their Careers Education, last Monday (18 March) all Lower School 2 (Year 8) pupils undertook a day in the workplace. In most cases this involved them accompanying one of their parents to work in order to get a taste of what the world of employment involves, while a small number accompanied another relative, family friend or were kindly offered placements by the parents of other pupils. U12 Netball Teams Perform Well

Our Lower School 1 netball teams performed well at the Lea Valley Tournaments on Tuesday (19 March). The A team had a shaky start, losing against Broxbourne A, but then discovered their true form, beating John Warner 8-3 and Turnford 10-4 before going down 2-5 to Goffs in the semi-final. The B team had an exceptional contest with an unbroken list of victories, beating Sele A 7-1, Goffs C 4-0 and Goffs B 4-2. After defeating a strong Presdales B team 4-2 in the semi-final they cruised to victory against Broxbourne B (4-0) to clinch the tournament.  > more

Lower School 2 Win Lea Valley Hockey

Our Lower School 2 Girls' Hockey teams excelled themselves on Tuesday (19 March), winning both the A and B team Lea Valley Hockey Tournaments and conceding only one goal between them in nine matches. The A team started well with a 2-0 win over Simon Balle – both goals scored by Siena Milner. The second game, against Broxbourne, was clinched by a devastating shot from Emily Hughes, after which the girls treated the John Warner team to a 5-0 hammering with goals from Rosie Walker, Sophie Maytum, Chloe Landymore and Siena Milner. This Easter break, many Haileyburians will be enjoying a relaxing holiday, studying hard for exams, eating far too many Easter eggs, or possibly doing all three. Bill Irving, teacher of Physics and new HM of Trevelyan from this September, will however, be running the Brighton Marathon on 14 April along with his son Henry (L11). Henry is an Officer Cadet at Welbeck and with fellow Officer Cadet Sam Woodward, the trio are running to raise funds for Help for Heroes. Rhiannon in GBR sailing team Qualifiers

In February Rhiannon Massey (L6, Aby) was selected to sail in the Nations Cup – an annual Youth sailing event for teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Over two days of racing she finished as 1st Girl in the Laser Radial class. This weekend saw the start of the Laser Qualifier series at Stokes Bay on the South Coast. The Qualifiers are used for GBR team selection for the World and European Championships. Haileybury's sporting triumphs continued last week when our U14 A squad were victorious in the Lea Valley Netball Tournament, winning all five of their matches in the process. Coach Emma Webdale explains: The opening game against Presdales got off to a slow start, the girls finding themselves 3-1 down after five minutes. Then suddenly the whole team seemed to receive an injection of energy and enthusiasm: they managed to turn the match around and won by 6-3. U13 Boys are County Hockey Champions

A fantastic display from the U13 Boys' Hockey team on Friday (1 March) saw them crowned Hertfordshire Champions. After a month of not having played together, the boys got off to a slow start and their first game, against Hitchin Boys' School, ended in a goalless draw after a couple of crucial saves from goalkeeper Harry Rawlings. They were then pitched against home team Watford Grammar School and in the second half Ben Morris and Philip Wistow both scored; after their 2-0 victory the boys didn't look back. Rowers Reach 750km in 24 hours for Charity

Over the weekend of 9-10 February members of the Haileybury Boat Club took part in a '24h erg' (which translates as a 24-hour indoor rowing-machine marathon) supporting one of the school's chosen charities, the Bobath Centre. The event took place in the Lower School Recreation Room and was organised and led by Boat Club Captain Andrew Hamilton (U6 Tho). The Bobath Centre provides treatment for children with Cerebral Palsy and the "distance covered" raised an impressive £1,500 after reaching a combined rowing distance  > more

Since last Easter, Jonathan Spavin (Head of ICT–elect) has been busy introducing two sets of pupils to one of the essential skills of the digital age: computer coding. 'Team M' has been meeting regularly in the Coding Club, while learning to code has been a Wednesday Sixth Form afternoon activity for 'Team Vi'.
