Haileybury is delighted to welcome Earl Attlee to the College to give this year's Attlee Memorial Lecture on Thursday 4 October. Earl Attlee is the grandson of Old Haileyburian (1897-1901) and Prime Minister (1945-51) Clement Attlee in whose honour the annual Attlee Memorial Lecture was established. Lord Attlee is himself a hereditary peer and Member of the House of Lords, where he takes the Conservative Whip (as opposed to his grandfather who was, of course, a Labour Party politician). On Monday morning (17 September) some of Haileybury's most able Sixth Form pupils sat the Erasmus Philosophy Essay Competition. This is the first year that Haileybury has entered the Erasmus Competition and entrants from Haileybury will compete against pupils from other schools including Winchester, Rugby, Oundle, City of London for Boys and Wycombe Abbey. BAFTA and EMMY award-winning documentary filmmaker Kate Blewett has accepted an invitation from the HPA to visit Haileybury and will speak on the subject of The Power of Television. Kate will show extracts from her films and talk about how she has used the medium of television to highlight the abuse and neglect of men, women and children across the globe; how her decisions on what to film, how to film it and then how to present her films to maximum effect have brought about positive change. Author, columnist and former professional cricketer Ed Smith will be visiting Haileybury next month to present a lecture on Cricket, Sport and Life: Why Luck Matters. His visit on 9 October will form part of the Haileybury's 150th Anniversary Lecture series. All welcome - the event is free but tickets are required. Freddie Flanagan (K) is Haileybury's 2012 recipient of the Harvard Book Prize in recognition of his excellent AS results in the Summer exams. Freddie, an Academic Scholar, obtained five As in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, French and Physics. Freddie hopes to read Engineering at either Cambridge or Durham. The start of the new academic year saw the annual awarding of Honorary Scholarships to pupils in the Lower Sixth. New Lower Sixth pupils and previous Vths, whose IGCSE/MYP results are judged to be particularly impressive are awarded the status of Honorary Scholar. They join the school's Senior Enrichment programme for those pupils who are holders of Academic Scholarships.
