Study confirms IB Diploma is a great preparation for university and employment

According to a new study on the performance of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme students in the UK post secondary system as compared to students with A Level or equivalent qualifications, conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) on behalf of the International Baccalaureate, a higher percentage of IB students achieve a first class honours award compared to students holding A Levels or equivalent qualifications. Sailing team brings home the silver trophy

Haileybury's sailing team performed brilliantly on Saturday at the BSDRA Eastern gathering, winning five of their six races and taking away the silver trophy as a result. Haileybury finished with the best win-loss ratio of any team and they were rightly delighted to have done so well. For Harry McVicar and George Fuest it was particularly fitting that they ended on such a high. They have sailed together in the 1st VI for nearly five years. Lizzie helps Spurs to county cup victory

Congratulations to Fifths pupil Lizzie Dunning (C) who was part of the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Under 16 team who won the Essex County Cup last weekend. Playing in her debut season, Lizzie has now helped the team to a league and cup double. The team were crowned unbeaten champions of the Essex County Girls' Football League Division 1, and Lizzie, playing on the right wing, managed to notch up six goals and five assists in just 14 games.  > more

School records broken at Herts League Athletics

The 2nd Herts League Athletics Match took place at Stevenage last Thursday, and the Haileybury athletes once again looked the strongest team at Under 16 level against some stiff competition, including St Columbas and Presdales. Individually, two performances stood out: Christian Scales ran 53.7 for the 400m to not only beat the school record which has stood since 1985 but also to qualify for the National Championships later this year. Callum wins silver in 200m

Congratulations to Callum Scutt, who has had an encouraging start to the athletics season, winning a silver medal in the Under 15 200-metre final at the recent Herts County Championships. Callum is a member of Shaftesbury Harriers Athletic Club and his target for the summer is to qualify for the English Schools Championships in both the 100 and 200m races. Good luck, Callum!  > more

Brambletye, Lochinver House shine at creative competition

Brambletye, a prep school in West Sussex, has won the prize for the Outstanding School's Contribution to Art competition at Haileybury's Prep and Primary Schools' Art and Creative Writing Competition 2011, while Lochinver House in Hertfordshire won the Outstanding School's Contribution in the Creative Writing section of the competition. Christian voted Norwich City Player of the Year

Congratulations to Removes pupil Christian Scales (BFr), who has been voted Under 14 Player of the Year for the 2010/2011 season at the Norwich City FC Academy. This is his first full year as an academy player and to be voted the best player by his peers is certainly an accollade to cherish. As Player of the Year, he was presented with an engraved award at the end of the session by the academy head coach/manager. Haileybury boys win Oakham Relays

Haileybury's athletes did a fantastic job at the Oakham Relays yesterday, winning the 4x400m (Christian Scales in 54.4s on the last leg) in a new school record; 2nd in the 1500m Relay; winners of the Medley Relay; and 3rd in the Dreilauf. This left the boys needing a win in the final event, the 4x100m, to take the overall Junior title. There was a slick performance from them, which allowed us to come home first in the 4x100m in a school record equalling 48.4s. Haileybury athletes notch up good performances

Last week was a very busy and successful period for the athletics teams. Tuesday saw the first of the Herts League Series where many solid performances left us looking the strongest team in the fixture. The pick of the bunch must go to Abigail Oghene (H) with a new school record in the U17 Girls Triple Jump. Thursday saw us compete in the annual Achilles Relays, an event held to attract 20 of the best independent schools in the country. Fundraising appeal for Rackets launched

The Development Department has announced the launch of a new appeal to raise £15,000 for the renovation of Haileybury's historic Rackets court. The court was opened on 22 September 1908 by Sir Egerton Coghill and, although it is still highly regarded as one of the finest playing surfaces in the world, it does need some renovation work. Cricketer Henry Olonga to speak on Speech Day

Henry Olonga, the former Zimbabwean cricketer, will be Haileybury's guest speaker on Speech Day, 28 May 2011. Henry made his international debut in a Test match against Pakistan at Harare in 1995, at age 18 years, 212 days, becoming the youngest player to represent Zimbabwe. He helped Zimbabwe to its first ever Test victory in that game. That year, he was no-balled for throwing in a Test match, and rebuilt his action before returning to cricket. Author Darren Shan to visit Haileybury

Darren Shan, the Irish author of fantasy and horror books, will visit Haileybury this Saturday, 7 May to talk to pupils, staff, parents, and the wider community. The master of children and young adult horror fiction will be treating us to an insight into the life of the tormented, valiant vampire world of Mr Crepsley whilst talking about his latest novel, Oceans of Blood, the second book in the series The Saga of Laten Crepsley.
