Double success for Haileybury debaters

Last week was very successful for Haileybury's debaters. On Monday, we hosted 28 teams for the first round of the Cambridge Schools' Debating Competition. Two Haileybury teams qualified for the next round: our first pair (Ben Phillips and Mollie Mendoza) and second pair (Lewis Colson and Ed Bayford). Our third pair (Andreas Payne and Justin Tsang) were one point away from qualifying, and our fourth pair (Ollie Hirschfield and Ed Barrett), as Middles, did very well. Turf Talk is launched

The Development Department's new blog, Turf Talk, has been launched with the aim of keeping pupils, parents, Friends, OHs and donors up to date with the developments of the new astroturf appeal. Through Turf Talk we will provide you with up-to-the-minute progress on the campaign, how much we have raised, what the progress is with building, and an active countdown to when this exciting new facility will be open for pupils to enjoy. Why Haileybury needs a new astro

During the winter term at Haileybury it is the team spirit and determination that is the driving force of girls' hockey. Captaining the 1st XI has been a fantastic way to end my time at Haileybury and whilst we have learnt from our disappointments, we have also, rightly, enjoyed the taste of success. Charles Walker MP to address pupils

The Haileybury Political Society will be hosting Charles Walker (MP, Broxbourne) on Thursday evening, 25 November, at 7.30pm in the Attlee Room. Mr Walker will be giving a backbencher's view on the new coalition government. All welcome.  > more

1st lax team win 10-3

Lower School girls had their very first lacrosse match this weekend against Princess Helena College (PHC). They played very well in the cold, wet weather but lost by 4 to the slightly more experienced team. The 1st team also played at PHC and came away with a 10-3 victory, despite poor field conditions and low visibility. The PHC goalkeeper was one of the strongest Haileybury has faced this season, but this did not stop midfielder Alana Zukas (Aby). Rowena selected for U19 county lacrosse

Sixth Former Rowena Sharp has been selected for the Under 19 Hertfordshire county team recently, after a two-round selection process. Three other Haileybury players, Vicky Allner, Emma Clark and Alana Zukas, were selected at the country trials, but Rowena was the sole player to move on through the second round. Vicky Allner was awarded team MVP at the trials. Rowena is now a member of the Under 19 county squad and has played at various tournaments in the southeast. Journalist Quentin Letts is guest of honour at 1806 Club

Parliamentary sketch writer and theatre critic for the Daily Mail, Quentin Letts (OH), will be the guest of honour at a breakfast meeting of the Haileybury 1806 Club on Thursday, 2 December 2010. Mr Letts, who attended Haileybury in the late 1970s, will be talking about his experiences within Parliament. He will also be signing copies of his latest book, Letts RIP!, in which he gives his view of the last decade of British politics. HYT launches online auction for work placement experiences

An online auction offering work experience placements to people aged 16 to 24 years of age has been launched by Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT). HYT, a small charity for whom former Prime Minister Clement Attlee once worked, alleviates poverty in Ugandan communities through training, education and environmentally friendly construction. Three pupils make the U15 county cricket squad

Congratulations to Mayowa Balogun, Joel Stewart and Jack Howe, who have been named in the Hertfordshire Under 15 winter training squad. Mayowa plays for Shenley CC, Joel for Knebworth CC and Jack for Harpenden CC.  > more

Chefs win three medals at prestigious competition

Compass Group chefs who are based at Haileybury gained three of the 20 prestigious places for the final of the Compass "Chef of the Year" competition, held on 12 October. They are: Leszek Karpinski - Senior - Silver Lee Warren - Junior - Silver Anthony Glover -Junior - Bronze During the past couple of months, some of our chefs have been taking part in "cook off"s to enter the competition at The Restaurant show at Earls Court. Nigel and Lewis distinguish themselves

Haileybury pupils enjoyed a successful Model United Nations conference at Croydon during half term, with Nigel Wong and Lewis Colson achieving "Distinguished Delegate" awards, both making considerable impressions on the back of sound preparation and solid presence throughout. Debaters win St Albans round of Cranmer Awards

Haileybury has won both the junior and senior competitions of the St Albans diocese round of the Cranmer Awards, a debating competition based on reading from the Book of Common Prayer. The competition was hosted by Haileybury on Saturday, 30 October. Sophie Sanders won the junior and George Barrett the senior competitions. Both pupils will compete in the national finals in March.  > more
