This year's House Challenge saw Allenby conquer all to win the trophy. This is Haileybury's own (obviously more academic) version of University Challenge, with teams of four (two Sixth Formers or Fifths, one Middle and one Remove), starter and bonus questions. The two first round nights in week 8 saw a highly charged contest, with one debate won on a tie-break by a Remove who knew the name of the new Doctor Who actor. The semi-finals and finals took place on Wednesday, 17 March, starting off with Kipling overwhelming Edmonstone and Allenby

On Saturday, 20 March, the Legends Tennis Centre at Haileybury played host to the inaugural Haileybury vs Queenswood Parents' tennis tournament. Sixteen players on each team made eight mixed doubles partnerships and each couple played three matches of 25 minutes per match. A point per game won was the scoring system and we are delighted to report that a final score was Queenswood 91 - Haileybury 101 and the Cup is Haileybury's for the year. We hope to make this an annual event so please get some practice now as we want to hold on to the silverware.

Congratulations to Alice Coley (H), who again played for Hertfordshire last Sunday against Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The tournament, which took place at Queenswood, saw Hertfordshire win 5-0 against Norfolk and 1-0 against Lincolnshire. Alice played midfield in the matches, taking all the short corners.

Congratulations to Rickmansworth PNEU for winning yesterday's Haileybury Science Challenge. They gained enough winning points by coming first in the physics task and second in the chemistry task. The Beacon were second overall, with St Hilda's in third position. Sixty eight Year 5 pupils from 17 prep and primary schools arrived at Haileybury for the start of the challenge to discover this year's secret theme, Harry Potter, which was revealed by the Haileybury science staff wearing gowns and witches' hats. The theme was wonderfully

Congratulations to Alice Coley (H) and Tory Hart (C), who last weekend played for the Hertfordshire County Hockey team against Kent and Essex in Canterbury. Unfortunately, the Herts squad lost to Essex 2-0 and to Kent 2-1 but both girls played very well. Well done!

An arts and crafts faire organised by the staff and pupils in Melvill last Saturday has raised £500 for Sightsavers, one of Haileybury's official charities for this year. Housemistress Ann Spavin is running the London Marathon in April on behalf of the charity and used this opportunity to do some fundraising. Cakes and sweets were cooked by the girls in the House and craft items were sold by a number of local people, including Katie Pruden (ceramic and stone sculpture - www.katiepruden.co.uk), ethical gifts by Green Tulip (www.greentulip.co.uk)

Haileybury's Chartwells chefs did us proud at Hotelympia, held at the Excel Centre this term. They brought back a total of seven medals, two certificates of merit and a hygiene award. With a very busy week at School, they gave up much of their own time to practise and prepare. The Salon Culinaire held at this exhibition is a world-class culinary competition for chefs with an unrivalled reputation across the world and meant they were competing against some of the best from hotels, restaurants and all types of catering establishments. "Congratulations

In the Under 13 Hertfordshire county sevens tournament, the Haileybury squad represented the School above and beyond the call of duty. They were outstanding on and off the field of play. The day was blisteringly cold due to the wind chill factor but not once did the boys complain. Haileybury had been drawn in the group of 'death' with school teams from St Columba's, Richard Hale, last year's winners Tring and Owen's. The opening game against St Columba's provided to a tight affair with the team working off the rust of playing sevens and after

Haileybury Senior Netball teams retained the Felhambury Trophy, contested as a triangular fixture against Oakham and Felsted schools. The 1st team had a very tight game against Oakham with both teams going goal for goal by centre pass - until Haileybury capitalised on a couple of missed passes by Oakham ending the first half 11- 7 up. Oakham were tough opponents and their shooters were on target from everywhere in the shooting area despite close marking by Jade Sexton. Then Freddie Waites intercepted a couple of high throws to the tall

Haileybury's debating first pair of Harry Sheehan (B) and Ben Phillips (Th) reached the East of England final of the ESU Schools' Mace on Saturday, only narrowly missing a place in the national final. Along the way we beat Oundle, Norwich and St Albans, to name but a few. Both speakers debated wonderfully, but Ben deserves special mention, being the only Fifth to get past the first round of the competition. The ESU Schools' Mace is the largest schools' debating competition in the country. To get this far, Harry and Ben have put themselves

The Housemistress of Melvill, Ann Spavin, is running the London Marathon in April in aid of Sightsavers, one of Haileybury's official charities for this year. Ian Robertson, BBC sports journalist and former Scottish rugby national, today officially opened Haileybury's new £2,2 million Modern Languages Centre. Mr Robertson was joined by hundreds of other guests for the unveiling of the plaque. In a highly amusing speech, he made reference to current and former England rugby players and their use - or misuse - of languages and spoke of the importance of being able to speak another language. After the speeches, guests were invited to tour the building, watch language classes in action

Congratulations to the Under 10 netball team from Heath Mount, who won yesterday's Haileybury Under 10 Prep Schools Netball tournament. They beat Norwich's Taverham Hall 5-4 in a nail-biting final. Ten schools were entered in the tournament: Duncombe, Widford Lodge, The Grove, Heathmount, Rickmansworth PNEU, St Joseph's in The Park, Palmer's Green High, Stormont, Ralph Sadleir and Taverham Hall. The tournament was arranged in two sections of five teams. The standard of netball played by all the teams was very high and all matches
