Congratulations to Olamide Akin-Olugbade, Elisabetta Di Lauro, Katherine Briggs and Nicole Masters, who yesterday raised £103 for the Haiti Relief Fund by selling cakes to pupils and staff. The girls are doing charity fundraising as part of their Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award.

Dr Laura Pugsley has been appointed as the new Head of Lower School at Haileybury, succeeding Mr Chris Jones, who is moving to Churcher's College in Petersfield, Hampshire to be Deputy Head. Dr Pugsley will take up the position at the start of the next academic year. She is well acquainted with the Lower School, having been a tutor there for the past five years. AUTUMN TERM FIELD WEEKEND 2010 will now run Saturday late afternoon (after fixtures) 9 October 2010 to Monday evening 11 October 2010. This will involve CCF Middles, Fifths and Sixths, and selected D of E Sixths, on both the Sunday and the Monday, plus D of E Middles on the Sunday only. (It is unclear at this range whether or not the Lower School 2 trip to Madrid which happened in October 2009 will be repeated in 2010.) This event is in support of the Home Farm Trust and the Hertfordshire Children's Fund. Directed by Quentin Thomas and Claire Tomsett, there are not many tickets left for our annual appointment with Haileybury's Jazzers. The Jazz Bands, Chamber Choir and Vocal Soloists fuse to help raise money for two great causes. This is always a terrific evening of good music. All welcome. With the weather having turned warmer and the majority of the snow having thawed on roads and paths around the school site, it has been decided that the pupils should wear their regular school uniform as from the start of the school day on Friday 15th January.

Haileybury's 1st football XI had some extensive pre-season training during a tour to Portugal just after New Year. The 17-member tour was immensely successful despite the squad being stranded at Faro Airport for a couple of days due to the bad weather in the UK! Julian Alliott and George Allen led the team, who all stayed at Browns Sports and Leisure Club for five days just outside Vilamoura on the Algarve. Removes pupils Mayowa Balogun has been selected as part of a squad of 16 players (from 30 possibles who attended the games over the Christmas holidays) to represent the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) Under 14s in two matches in the next few weeks. The matches are against Walsall FC on 16 February 2010 and West Bromwich Albion FC on 17 February 2010. Both games will take place in the Midlands. In view of the amount of snow remaining on the ground here at school and the poor weather which is forecast to continue next week, it has been decided that pupils may wear warm, practical home clothes as from the start of term and while the cold weather continues. In particular, shoes should be practical for walking around the campus and negotiating the slippery conditions. This decision will be kept under review and further information will be posted here on the school website.

The school term at Haileybury will begin on Sunday 10th and Monday 11th January as planned. Boarders should aim to return as usual on Sunday evening, while day pupils should aim to be at school in time for Registration on Monday morning. A number of factors, including a sudden withdrawal of MOD funding for CCF training for the remainder of the financial year, have prompted us to review arrangements for the end of next term. The changes apply to the Fifth and Sixth Forms.
