'Swine' Flu Update

During the half term holiday, many pupils and parents may travel overseas, either making their way to their home country or for holidays. As promised at an earlier stage, we would like to offer the following advice in the light of the H1N1 Influenza outbreak, commonly known as "Swine Flu". The advice is largely drawn from the Health Protection Agency and further information can be found on their website. Antonio wins Loughborough invitational race

Congratulations to Antonio Infantino, who won the 100m invitational race at Loughborough International last weekend in 10.80s despite pulling a muscle at the 50-metre mark. Unfortunately, this meant he could not run the last leg in the GB Junior Team. However, as long as he recovers from injury, he will run for the Hertfordshire Senior Men's team in the Inter-Counties Championships in Bedford over the Bank Holiday weekend.  > more

A team of six Haileybury sailors recently won the silver fleet section of the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association (BSDRA) Eastern championships, held at Middle Nene Lake near Oundle.  > more

Callum breaks 28-year old record for 100m

Congratulations to Lower School 1 pupil Callum Scutt (12), who won the Under 13 100m and long jump events at the Hertfordshire county athletics championships last Sunday, 10 May, in Stevenage. In winning the 100m race, Callum broke a 28-year championship record with a time of 13.1s. The second placed runner's time was 14.2s. Callum, who was running for his club, Herts Phoenix, at the tournament, was subsequently chosen to represent Hertfordshire in the Under 13 inter-county championships in July in Kingston, Surrey. ISC chairman is Guest of Honour on Speech Day

The Guest Speaker at Haileybury's Speech Day, on Saturday, 23 May, is Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas, the Chairman of the Independent School's Council (ISC). Dame Judith was born in New Zealand. A solicitor, she holds honorary doctorates in Law from three universities and is currently Chairman of The Royal Opera House and a non-executive Director of Merrill Lynch Inc.  Previously, Dame Judith was political leader of the City of London and Chairman of its Local Education Authority. Edward Holroyd (Ha 59)

It is with much sadness that the Haileybury community learned of the death on 8 May of Edward Holroyd (Ha 59), who was a Life Governor, Chairman of the Haileybury Guild and the Haileybury Youth Trust, former Chairman of the Development Board and benefactor. It was thanks to Edward's generosity that Big School was refurbished in 2006. He was also the driving force behind the refocused Haileybury Youth Trust, as well as an active member of the Old Haileyburian Golf Society. Antonio to run in European athletics meeting

Antonio Infantino has been selected by UK Athletics to compete in Pavia, Italy, this weekend in the international European promotional meeting. Apart from his school race at the Chomeley Shield last weekend, it will be Antonio's first race since the Commonwealth Youth Games in India last October after being advised by his UKA coach, Mike McFarlane, to miss the indoor season to continue winter training and concentrate on the outdoor season. Abigail and Nancie chosen for Herts Youth Games netball section

Congratulations to both Abigail O'Ghene and Nancie Muzzlewhite who have been selected to represent the District for netball in the Herts Youth Games, which will be held at The Hertfordshire Sports Village on Saturday, 9 May. Approximately 50 girls attended the initial trials, after which a squad of 20 were taken through to training sessions in preparation for the final selection of 10 girls. They will be representing the East Herts team against the other eight regions across the county.  > more
