The Kazakhstani Minister of Education, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, the Mayor of the City of Almaty, Tasmagambetov I N, and the British Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Paul Brummell, were guests of honour at the official launch of Haileybury Almaty yesterday. Haileybury UK had strong representation at the celebrations, with ex-Haileybury musicians, Josh Edwards, Olivia Godlee, Oliver LePage-Dean and Emily Wetherall, performing. Haileybury's Political Society will be hosting Mr Charles Walker, the Conservative MP for Broxbourne, on Thursday, 27 September 2007. Mr Walker's topic is "Whither the Conservatives - can Cameron beat Brown?" The event will take place in the Attlee Room between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. Haileybury has announced that its boarding numbers are up dramatically compared with seven years ago. This is in direct contrast to the recent national trend which indicates that boarding in general is on the decline. In September 1999 there were 372 boarders at the school, compared to 472 in January 2006, and 515 in September 2007. This is almost a 40% rise in eight years. Haileybury's Literary Society, in association with Books@Hoddesdon, is bringing two well-known authors to speak at School this term. Michael Wood, fresh from his hit BBC2 documentary, The Story of India, will be at Haileybury on Tuesday, 25 September in the Attlee Room, while Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the "world's greatest living explorer", will speak on Thursday, 8 November in Big School. Congratulations to Jamie George (BFr) and Nick Fraser (L), who have both been selected as part of the Under 18 England Academy Conference squad. The squad will meet three times in the next three months - for games against Leinster in Dublin, a training camp at Bisham Abbey and a game against a French Academy in Paris. After that, all players will be further assessed to determine who will be invited to a fourth session in December. The squad will be coached by Alex Sanderson, Mark Mapletoft and Ben Ryan.
