1st hockey team in closely fought loss to King's

Last Saturday the 1st hockey XI travelled to King's Canterbury without captain Fran Burn, who was at Cambridge University for a choral award interview. King's Canterbury are the holders of the national under 18 indoor hockey trophy, but Amber Banbury opened the scoring 10 minutes into the first half in the pouring rain. Lisa Hunt marshalled the defence and tackled brilliantly and Vicky Hewett was outstanding in goal in a staunch defensive performance. King's scored with a couple of minutes to go in the first half. Haileybury's Great River Race

Twelve staff and pupils had the experience of a lifetime at the beginning of September when they entered the Great River Race, an event which has been dubbed "the rower's London Marathon". After a celebrity send-off from William Franklin, the team finished the 22-mile course in the excellent time of 4h10m. Sophie comes in under two hours in Great North Run

Upper Sixth pupil Sophie Auster's time of 1 hour 50 minutes in the Great North Run has so inspired her that she is determined to better her performance next year. Sophie was one of 200 people running for the Prostate Cancer Charity and hopes to raise £250 in total. "It was a fantastic experience," says Sophie. Jamie selected for U14 county rugby squad

Removes pupil Jamie George has been selected for the County Under 14 rugby squad. His current excellent form was borne out by his performance in consecutive matches for the Yearlings A, against Sevenoaks and Haberdashers, where he scored a hat trick of tries in the No 8 position. Amy and Charis are the spelling champs!

Removes pupils Amy Gandon and Charis Bridgman Baker have reached the quarter finals of a spelling competition run by the BBC. The competition aims to find the best under 14 speller in the country. Amy and Charis won the internal school competition and will travel to BBC studios in London on Saturday to compete in the quarter finals.  > more

Haileybury hockey players star at club level

Haileybury's hockey players were the stars of club sport this weekend, when Tom Schwarz (Th), Moritz Merkenich (K) and Matt Nash (Th) all played leading roles for Broxbourne's 2nd XI in a record victory against West Herts in the opening league game of the season. In the 11-0 thrashing, and on their debuts, Tom scored twice and Moritz once and were certainly the "talk of the clubhouse" in the evening celebrations. Four lacrosse players to try out for county

The 1st and 2nd lacrosse teams had considerable success at this weekend's county tournament. The 1st XII had a great morning across the board. The team beat Bedford Modern 5-2 and Norwich 9-1, tied St George's 2-2 and conceded to the tournament winners, Berkhamsted, 5-0. The Most Valuble Player was Izzie Baugh, who also earned a trial for the county team along with Lauren Smith, Alex Cobb and Sophie Baird. First hockey side win 5-0 against King's Ely

Last Saturday saw Haileybury's hockey teams facing King's Ely. Even though the girls knew the strength of the Ely side, they played an excellent game, with Molly Pallett scoring a hat trick and Amber Banbury continuing to increase her score tally with another two goals, leaving us with a comfortable 5-0 win. The second team also played well and gained a 2-0 win, with both goals from Jenna Wood. Milly Baugh and Annie Dale stood out as particularly excellent on the pitch. Four U15 lacrosse players invited to county trials

The U15 lacrosse team competed in a county tournament on Saturday, putting in a very credible performance to end third in its pool. The squad made some real progress in its unit play, especially in its defence which was commented upon by the selectors. This was in no small way due to the efforts of Charis Bridgman-Baker who was voted Most Valuable Player by the coaches present. Other star performances were on display from Kara Stone, an intercepting genius, Lucy Philips, an inspired attacker, and an impressive début from Maya Brankovic.  > more

Hockey victory over Queenswood

In a battle of Hertfordshire's top hockey schools, Haileybury convincingly beat Queenswood last week. The 1st team won 3-1, with goals by Amber Banbury and Molly Pallett who also hit the bar in another attempt. Ashley Coe put another ball wide with two minutes to go, so the score could have been even more convincing, according to coach, Ian Sanders. The 2nd team had just as much success, winning 3-1 - goals by Jenna Woods and Nicola Cawley - while the U15s won 2-0. Well done to all players.  > more

Lacrosse teams deliver the goods

Moving into the second week of school the Lacrosse teams have competed no fewer than five times! Last Thursday saw the 1st and 2nd XIIs travel away to play Haberdasher's Ask, the second ranked lacrosse school in the county. The 2nd XII included new additions Alex Allen, who had played lacrosse in the lower school club, and Alexis Barker, a new L6 who had picked up a stick for the first time the preceding Tuesday, as well as tested regulars like Emily Bowden-Eyer, captain, and Katorina Nau, cover-point. Outstanding exam success for music

Audiences are well accustomed to the excellent standard of music-making at Haileybury, but this year's cohort of pupils taking A Level, IB and GCSE music put on an impressive academic display in their summer examinations. Every pupil achieved the top grade (A* or A), which was a remarkable achievement given the growing number of pupils who take music every year. First win of the season for lacrosse team

The Haileybury lacrosse season has started in earnest, with 17 players giving up valuable tanning time to attend the first ever pre-season training camp. The demanding schedule effectively delivered a half term's training in three days and our athletes rose to the challenge beautifully. The first game of the season was against the St George's squad, one of the more formidable programmes in the area. Despite their draw dominance, our defence held strong against the 22-strong squad. Sporting success for Alex and Antonio

Some of Haileybury's top sporting stars have been hard at work during the summer break, with two pupils bringing home national titles and gold medals. Up and coming athlete Antonio Infantino (Tr) competed in the National Club championships in Birmingham last weekend, running for Enfield and Harringey athletics club. He won the 100m (with a time of 11.7 seconds, despite a 2m/s wind in his face) and 200m races in his age group.
