Harvard Book Prize winner announced

Freddie Flanagan (K) is Haileybury’s 2012 recipient of the Harvard Book Prize in recognition of his excellent AS results in the Summer exams.

Freddie, an Academic Scholar, obtained five As in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, French and Physics. Freddie hopes to read Engineering at either Cambridge or Durham.

Every year the Harvard Club of the UK selects a book to award to an outstanding pupil at selected secondary schools. The Prize Book is awarded to "an outstanding student in the penultimate year, academically excellent, with exceptional personal qualities, who makes a significant contribution to school or community."

Only 100 Harvard Prize Books are awarded annually in the United Kingdom. This year’s book, What Money Can’t Buy, by Michael Sandle, looks at what is the proper role of markets in a democratic society, and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets do not honour and money cannot buy?

In addition to his studies, Freddie is a College Prefect with responsibilities for activities; he is a 1st XI footballer, 1st XI cricketer and extremely able musician who plays in the school Jazz Band. He is spending some of his forthcoming half-term holidays working for the Haileybury Youth Trust in Uganda. In short Freddie is an outstanding all-rounder and thus well deserving of the award.
