Haileybury pupils win Rotary Technology Challenge

On Tuesday 19 June over 100 pupils from schools in the Hertford, Ware and Broxbourne areas competed in the Rotary Technology Challenge at the Broxbourne Civic Hall, part of the 10,000 who take part annually in the UK. Teams of four in three age categories of Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors had to design and construct a coin-sorter, for a charity of their own choice, from a pack of limited materials and using only hand-tools. All three of the Haileybury teams presented fully-working practical pieces and a supporting design folio for the final assessment and were monitored and interviewed throughout the day-long exercise by a team of judges. The practical testing session, at the end of the day, projected on to a huge screen so that the entire hall could see, proved to be quite a nerve-wracking experience for several of our pupils but all came through very well indeed! The supporting folios were informative, showing details of each stage of the research, design and development processes and were extremely well-presented. There were many very positive comments from judges and other staff present regarding the quality of work from our three teams.

Haileybury’s Senior team won their age group with the other two teams coming a close second in their respective age categories. Mr Lapidge from the Technology department staff team, who accompanied the pupils for the day, also won in the teachers’ category and to come away with this, a win and two close second places for the pupils made for a very good day.
