Haileybury pupil gains Open University module

Haileybury Upper Sixth pupil, Jamie Bennett (Th), has achieved a module qualification through the Open University after studying for the course independently.

He was introduced to the course, called "Molecules, Medicines and Drugs: A Chemical Story", by GlaxoSmithKline, who offered to sponsor him to study the course after he did work experience with the company last year.

"Doing chemistry A Level and the work experience were an asset because I was familiar with many of the basic concepts in the course, which included CDs on how drugs are discovered and a molecular modelling kit to help me understand the properties of drug molecules."

Jamie, who does A Level Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths at Haileybury, says the module he took enabled him to broaden his subjects to biochemistry and medicinal chemistry, which are not normally covered much for Sixth Form.

"I am glad I decided to take the module because it allowed me to study independently. I have accepted an offer to study chemistry at university next year, so hopefully the self motivation I got out of the module will help me there."

Although he hasn’t made a final decision on a career, Jamie is considering going into chemical research after university.

Well done!
