Haileybury appoints new Lower School head

Christopher Jones (33) has been appointed as the next Head of the Lower School at Haileybury from September 2004. He succeeds David Pyle, who has been appointed Head of the Junior School at Farringtons & Stratford House School, Kent.

Chris, currently Head of the History Department at Haileybury, graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford with a BA degree in History in 1992. This was followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, specialising in History, from the Oxford University Department of Education the following year.

He has a distinguished sporting record, being a hockey ‘Blue’ and having represented the Oxford University Cricket Club against both first class and minor counties’ teams.

After leaving Oxford, Chris taught History for six years at Peter Symonds School, Winchester. He was appointed Head of History at Haileybury in September 1999 and since then the History department has become one of the leading lights of the school. The recent academic results have been superb; last year, for instance, 96% of the A Level candidates achieved Grade A or B and each of the 10 Higher Level International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates in History achieved 7, the highest grade.

"The Lower School will move into its next era led by a young man of outstanding talent with an established record of success," according to Stuart Westley, Master at Haileybury. "He will ensure that our young pupils will continue to be extremely well-supported during their time in the Lower School."
