Hailey, Edmonstone win House Athletics

House Athletics 2003 was filled with its usual drama and tight competitions. Most of the school was at Wodson Park in Ware for the afternoon. The support was fantastic as pupils and staff urged their houses along. 78 events took place, including 44 on the track in the four hours. The strong wind in the faces of the competitors prevented any notable times on the track but several competitors achieved fantastic times given the impediment.

Hugo Henderson (Ba) showed what an exciting talent he was by winning the Boys U17 100m hurdles in a time well below the county standard, despite the wind in his face. Matt Atkinson (Ed) won the Boys U17 400m in 55 seconds and coped well with the head wind along the killer last 100m. Yuki Omenai (Ba) ran 11.6 in the Boys Open 100m, well outside his PB but a very good time in the conditions. Mark Aitcheson (Ed) won the Boys U17 Triple Jump with a good distance. Tom Englander jumped 1.75m in the Boys Open High Jump and appears to be getting back to his best form.

Fran Burn (Alb) produced two fantastic performances in the Girls U17 100m and 200m. Sophie Auster (Aby) and Chekkie Kauntze (Aby) competed well against each other in 1500m, both running under 6 minutes. The most exciting events were the relays, especially the 4x300m relays, a new event this year. Hailey won the U15 4x300m in a tight finish against Colvin and Allenby.

The House Competitions were as tight as they always have been, with a matter of a few points deciding most age groups. The closest of all the competitions was the U17 Boys where four points separated the top three teams.
