Barney in top 50 for physics

Upper Sixth pupil, Barney Sleep (K), has won a gold medal in this year’s British Physics Olympiad, putting him in the top 50 physicists for his age group in the country. His achievement also gets him through to the first selection round for the British team for the 2004 International Physics Olympiad.

Barney, whose ambition is to be an Automotive Design Engineer, will be coached by post until March when he will sit his second paper.

"This paper is of a higher standard, and pupils taking it are only expected to answer a few questions – if that!" Barney explains.

The top 15 scorers of that round are then selected for the British Physics Olympiad squad, which trains until the Summer when the top six are flown to Korea to take part in the International Olympiad (IPho 2004).

When he leaves school, Barney plans to take a gap year with the YinI (Year in Industry Scheme) and then will hopefully go to Cambridge where he has been offered a place to study Engineering.
