Cemetery: TANGA MEMORIAL CEMETERY Tanzania

Tanga was occupied by a Commonwealth Force on 7 July 1916, and the bodies of over 200 officers and men who had fallen in an earlier attack were found buried in various places and were reburied in this Cemetery. It was not possible to identify the bodies and the graves are therefore recorded as those of unidentified Commonwealth soldiers. Their names, together with those who fell in the attack on 7 July 1916 and whose graves are not known are engraved on a memorial in the form of a screen wall in the Cemetery. Located to the rear boundary of the cemetery will be found the Tanga (Jasin) Memorial. This memorial takes the form of a screen wall with inscribed panels, and commemorates those who fell at or near Jasin in January and July 1915. Haileybury Register 1862-1911
