Netball at Haileybury is a highly-attended team sport throughout all year groups. It is taught from Lower School through to Sixth Form, with teams competing in inter-House, inter-school and regional tournaments, as well as touring. The skills learnt in netball develop and hone hand/eye co-ordination, agility and fitness, as well as close-order team work and the ability to trust and rely on each other.
At Haileybury, netball is one of the most popular sports for girls.
Played by all year groups, with an active programme of fixtures, tournaments and tours, it is also vehemently supported by pupils in each girls House.
Our aim is to take our elite teams to their very highest standard yet at the same time encouraging all girls to represent the school at their own level.
In Lower School, netball is played in both Autumn and Spring Terms, with Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings set aside for fixtures. We regularly see close to 100% participation at our Monday and Friday practice sessions.
For our U14, U15, Fifths and Sixth form girls, netball is played in the Spring Term and co-curricular games training sessions or matches take place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon with Saturday afternoon for fixtures.
Our co-curricular programme ensures that we can play top opposition from within the County, where the sport is very popular.
At Lower School, every girl will gain experience representing the school netball teams; we regularly field two U12 teams, two U13 teams and one mixed U12/U13 team at fixtures.
Currently, over 120 girls from Removes to Sixth Form combine regularly to play netball. Where our opposition allows we can field A, B and C teams at both U14 and U15.
We combine our Fifths and Sixth form together from which we form the elite 1st VII squad; our 2nd VII, 3rd VII and 4th VII play in fixtures with other schools who can field such numbers.
Those girls not selected for teams train as a Development Squad integrated within the whole Senior set up. This is highly beneficial as we are then able to feed into the senior teams when necessary for fixtures.
Lower School netball teams have a packed programme of both matches and Tournaments, including the Lea Valley Netball Tournaments too where, in Spring Term 2014, our U12 ‘A’ team became District Champions!
At older age groups, where depth of our squads allows, Haileybury enters the U14 and U19 National Schools County Netball Tournament played in the Autumn Term.
The U14s also take part in the local Lea Valley U14 - Senior Tournaments in the Spring term.
In 2011 Haileybury U19 1st VII qualified for the Regional East Tournament where we missed a place in the Nationals by 1 point!
Our 1st VII are also invited to take part in an Invitational U18 Netball Tournament at Bedford Modern, where we have had success by reaching the Finals.
Haileybury's U14, U15 and Senior squads have a full programme of fixtures against schools such as Kimbolton, Sevenoaks, Aldenham, King's Canterbury, Felsted, King's Ely, The Leys, Chigwell, Highgate, Perse School and Queenswood.
At the end of the Spring Term, the Haileybury House netball competitions are played in a fiercely yet respectful spirit. It’s a sight to behold seeing the outdoor courts full of players in their House colours contesting for every ball thrown! Spectators show their support in decibel level!
Every year – usually at the end of February/beginning of March - Haileybury hosts an U10 Netball Tournament for Preparatory Schools. A trophy and medals are awarded to the winning school and a prize is given to the ‘Player of the Tournament’ as judged by the Haileybury Netball Staff.
Tours now form a key part of the netball year. In the Summer holiday of 2014, a Senior Netball and Hockey Tour took place in Sri Lanka. A Senior Tour of a similar nature is generally run every 2/3 years.
It was a superb experience full of excellent competitive matches against both clubs and private schools in Sri Lanka. The welcome was so warm and the most moving part was the opportunity for our girls to lead coaching clinics with local youngsters in tsunami-hit areas and to immerse themselves in the local culture and offer charitable help to those still badly affected post the disaster.
In Easter holiday 2015, a Lower School Netball Tour travelled to Malta. All Lower School girls were invited and the uptake was brilliant with 40 from 45 choosing to join us. This trip runs regularly every alternate year so every girl who joins Haileybury in Lower School has the opportunity to be part of a Netball Tour.
In the Autumn Term 2015 a new Lower School girls mini netball Tournament has been arranged, with girls travelling to Roedean for a weekend.
Haileybury is blessed with excellent netball facilities including two indoor netball courts situated in our well-equipped Haileybury Sports Centre. Our outdoor courts, situated on Hailey Lane courts, are all full size, offering pupils the ability to play on six different playing courts.
Louise Rudd is responsible for netball at Haileybury. The sport is led, coached and umpired by experienced PE teachers and a coach who has worked at National Super League level; the College is proud of the top-level coaching and umpiring by netball staff that is provided for all girls and all teams in training and matches.
We are also pleased to have Jackie Mizon as our netball professional. Jackie is an International Netball Federation Umpire who has officiated 39 internationals worldwide to date and travelled to the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sidney. She is also a National Superleague Umpire and is involved in England Netball Umpire Development. Jackie is a UKCC Level 2 Netball Coach and has worked on the Herts University Netball Programme, with local clubs in Hertfordshire and has 20 years’ experience working within both primary and secondary school netball.
