Under the expert guidance of Michael Owen (ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions Captain) and 24 highly-skilled coaches, rugby is a core part of the sporting programme at Haileybury. This, combined with a prestigious fixture list, excellent facilities and solid backing, make Haileybury an excellent place to play this famous game.
Haileybury's rugby heritage stretches right back to the 19th century.
Over the years, the College has played all the major public schools including Harrow, Tonbridge, Uppingham and Wellington, and it retains a prestigious fixture list.
For all wishing to play this historic sport, Haileybury offers a combination of excellent facilities in a fabulous setting with an expert coaching team.
The set up at Haileybury comes under our Director of Rugby Michael Owen (ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions Captain).
Running a team of 24 highly-qualified coaches - many with vast experience of running first-class rugby - Michael ensures that every pupil is exposed to the very latest coaching techniques.
As well as our coaching team, we also possess excellent facilities including two all-weather surface pitches and the development of new grounds to bring the total number of pitches to eight. Our rugby squads also spend two weeks at the state-of-the-art CrossFit facility in Hailey Lane.
For many, of course, our XV pitch, with its stunning backdrop of Terrace and Chapel, is the envy of many a visiting school.
A key part of the success we enjoy at Haileybury lies in the generous funding rugby receives here.
In particular, we are particularly lucky to have very generous financial support from the Old Haileyburian RFC who contribute significantly each year both in terms of new equipment and subsidising tours.
This ensures that the College is able to invest in a continuous upgrading and improvement of facilities, ensuring that Haileybury remains at the forefront of schools’ rugby and able to compete with the finest in the land at the highest level.
At Haileybury, our Sports Scholars are those with strong sporting and leadership abilities and a particularly impressive competitive ethic. Scholarships for talented rugby players are hotly contested; the best will also be invited to join our High Performance Sports Programme. For every pupil who wishes to play rugby, they can be sure of joining an august group; Haileybury boasts several famous players among its rugby-playing alumni.
Successful recent leavers include Chris Wyles (USA and Saracens Premiership Winner), Jamie George (England World Cup Squad, England U20 and Saracens Premiership Winner), Matt Hankin (England U20 and Saracens),Tom George (England Students and Captain of Richmond), Ben Thomas (England U20, Saracens and London Scottish), Biyi Alo (Saracens), Luke Sherriff (Oxford Blue, Harlequins and Nottingham), Nico Fraser (England U18), Charlie Desmond (Cambridge Blue) and Dan Stewart (Cambridge Blue).
Tours form a regular part of the rugby set up at Haileybury. In August 2014, the senior boys' rugby squad went to South Africa, playing a series of superb matches against competitive opposition. An enormous amount was learnt: on the rugby field, there can’t have ever been a better pre-season training experience, enabling us to start the season with real impetus, but from a more global perspective, it was wonderful to work with the children in the townships and share a mutual love for rugby with the locals there.
In July 2016 the senior boys' rugby squad went to Canada on an extremely successful tour, winning four matches out of four.
With such a superb range of facilities on offer, combined with expert coaching and solid funding, there really has never been a better time for a promising young player to join Haileybury than now.
This is highlighted by the fact that Haileybury was chosen to host Argentina and USA as one of the 41 Team Bases that hosted the 20 participating teams during the Rugby World Cup in 2015.
