"The third-oldest House at Haileybury, Thomason is a diverse and cultured House in which artists, thespians, sportsmen and musicians share their appreciation of each other’s talents. It is truly a home-from-home for 55 boys, who together create an atmosphere that is happy, supportive, ambitious, loyal and proud."
Thomason was the third House to be opened at Haileybury and is named after James Thomason, Lieutenant Governor of the North West Province, Governor-elect of Madras and great, great uncle of Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery.
The House colours are blue and yellow, adapted from Trinity College, Cambridge, the alma mater of the Reverend Lewis Prance, Thomason's first Housemaster. The House badge is described as "a griffin's head, couped between two wings sable" (a truncated griffin between two black wings).
Right at the heart of the original school, Thomason is a home from home for 58 boys, encouraging a proud and loyal atmosphere while at the same time being happy, supportive and ambitious.
As well as being close to the gym and sports pitches, the House is also a diverse and cultured place in which artists, thespians, sportsmen and musicians all feel at home to share their appreciation of each other’s talents.
Thomason aims to instil seven major qualities in every boy affiliated to it which will last them for life. These are that they should be: supportive; selfless; have respect for others; be loyal; have integrity; have self-discipline; and have the courage to be ambitious.
The House has excellent facilities and welcoming spaces where boys can enjoy their "down time". There is one large Common Room, with table tennis and pool tables, and a smaller Common Room with a TV, as well as a communal kitchen for all years.
Removes (Year 9) and Middles (Year 10) share rooms in the dormitory upstairs, while Fifths (Year 11) and Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth all have their own private rooms. There is also a small Sixth Form Common Room, where boys can relax or host pupils from other Houses.
Dougal Lyon became HM of Thomason in September 2018 when he joined Haileybury as a teacher of Geography.
Dougal is supported in his work by an experienced team of Tutors at Thomason, in addition to a House Matron who helps with the day to day domestic management of the House. The House also has its own representative from the Haileybury Parents' Association.
