Physical Education and Sports Science

Physical Education at Haileybury

Physical Education has never been more relevant. The world of fitness and sports science is becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives. An understanding of these sometimes complex topics is essential to allow our pupils to lead healthy, active and balanced lives.

Our talented staff and excellent facilities provide pupils with an energising and stimulating environment in which to maximise their physical literacy, knowledge and ability.

Curriculum

We teach pupils a broad, balanced sports programme suitable for each individual and preparing pupils for a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity, promoting confidence, health and wellbeing.

In the Middle School, pupils who demonstrate an interest in furthering their physical literacy and ability can opt for Edexcel GCSE Sports Science.

In the Senior School, pupils can take the first step towards their dream of careers in Sports, Physiotherapy, Leisure Industry and Sports Performance. We have a dual offer of A Level OCR Sports Science and the new International Baccalaureate (IB) Sport Exercise and Health Science, so pupils can tailor their education to suit their individual needs.

Guidance about the vast array of university courses in the subject and entry requirements is readily available.

Enrichment

Combined with the co-curricular department, competitive and recreational sport is offered in a wide range of activities, offering each pupil a chance to excel and find their niche physical activity for lifelong involvement.

For pupils who demonstrate excellence and/or the potential to excel, the new Haileybury High Performance Sports Programme (HPSP) offers additional support and structure to reach the next performance level through a specific training and mentoring programme (sports scholarships are available). Enrichment lectures and trips are also part of this programme.

We recognise of course that some pupils find physical activity challenging or may feel inadequate in the face of more gifted peers.

We believe that everyone can enjoy sport and find an activity which suits them – whether in team sports or individual pursuits. In each case, additional support is provided with the aim of making every pupil excited about participating and excelling to the best of their ability.
