We spoke to a number of pupils from different nationalities studying for the IB Diploma, asking them to give us their views on how they found it.
Their replies reveal an acknowledgement of the hard work involved but also what makes studying for the Diploma such an exciting choice for many...
"The IB Diploma requires a lot of psychological endurance - it consists of highly concentrated levels of work spread out over two years and it is a long, tough journey. However, a major benefit of being part of the Haileybury community is the ability to communicate with teachers at any time of the day, which allows everything to be managed efficiently and effectively."
"If you are organised, success-orientated and set yourself high academic and co-curricular goals, the IB is the right choice."
"Haileybury provides an ideal environment for the IB Diploma, providing us, the pupils, with internationally-minded and experienced teachers as well as a wide range of co-curricular activities to choose from. The extended essay is interesting since it really is the first time you have to investigate really thoroughly and in detail."
"I started the IB Diploma programme almost six months ago and up until now it has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. I was born and have lived in Italy for almost all of my life, and coming to Haileybury has given me the chance to connect with other cultures and people with backgrounds different from mine. The IB Diploma is helping me push my boundaries and teaching me to co-operate with others, have discipline and to bond with people who are very different from me. The routine is tiring and has been bringing me to my limits but the programme is showing me how much I can accomplish when I really work for it."
"The IB Diploma is a challenging, interesting and rewarding programme which allows its students to be extremely well prepared for further education. The teachers are very supportive and give up any free time in their day to meet with you if you need help."
"The IB is very strenuous, but it prepares you for the future - especially university. It is very well balanced, as it includes studies, sports and extra-curricular activity all in one. The extended essay and Theory of Knowledge make it even tougher but overall I would recommend the IB to anyone who thinks they can cope with it."
"The IB Diploma is itself sometimes very hard work... it challenges you a lot but you can do it and, if you've done your work, you really can enjoy your life at Haileybury. Help is always there from the teachers if you have problems"
"The IB is great. In Italy, the school system is very different and is more focused on the academic side and not focused on the social development of your character. The IB opens so many possibilities and so many opportunities that I think it is truly wonderful. Yes, it is tiring and sometimes I ask myself why I started it but, when I look back at this I can see that in the last five months I can really see how I have improved and changed for the better."
"I feel that that the IB Diploma itself is incredibly hard and really pushes me past what I thought was my limit. At Haileybury, the Diploma students are a support group for each other. I was super-nervous starting here but in Lower Sixth there are so many pupils that we all helped each other integrate. Being part French, I was so happy to find girls in my House who spoke French; it's like an extended family. I like the balance between co-curricular, sport and work: it's nice to have a creative release, especially when working so hard."
"The IB Diploma is a great opportunity for all pupils of different nationalities to broaden their knowledge through a variety of different subjects and activities. As a German student, I myself know that it is a difficult start and it might not be that easy to get into the new style of learning but, once you get into it, it will be a wonderful experience even though you might face obstacles"
