The IB Diploma at Haileybury

The International Baccalaureate Diploma is an increasingly popular Sixth Form choice and is especially sought after by pupils valuing an international outlook as part of their future plans. For many it is seen as the "international gold standard" of education.

Haileybury is one of the leading IB schools in the UK and is consistently highly placed in The Times IB League Tables, having offered the IB Diploma since 1998.

Currently, approximately half our Sixth Form study for the IB Diploma and it is a respected, successful and fundamental part of Haileybury's curriculum.

Our results are particularly impressive; in the summer of 2016 our IB graduates achieved a collective provisional average score of 37.7 points (out of a possible 45). This compares extremely favourably with the global average score of 30.07 (taken from the May 2016 examination session). 

Distinctive characteristics

The IB is different from other curricula because it encourages pupils to think critically and to challenge what they are told. It is also independent of governments and national systems, and consequently incorporates best practice from a range of international frameworks and curricula. Core to the IB is that it encourages each and every pupil to consider both their local and international environment.

Unlike a national curriculum, the IB Diploma reflects best practice across a range of different educational frameworks and curricula. It encourages pupils to be internationally-minded and to think beyond their immediate environment.

Basis of the IB Diploma

Central to the Diploma, and all IB programmes, is that pupils “learn how to learn”, with the unique theory of knowledge (TOK) course central to their studies.

Pupils are encouraged to try different approaches to learning and to take responsibility for their own educational progress. This balances particularly well with Haileybury's own ethos of combining academic development, pastoral well-being and co-curricular learning.

The Diploma delivers capabilities in each pupil which will be extremely valuable throughout their careers. These including the ability to ask challenging questions, to think critically and to develop research skills proven to help them in higher education. The Diploma also encourages pupils to be active in their communities and to take their learning beyond academic study.

Academic study

Of course, the IB Diploma is a highly valued academic qualification. Each pupil chooses their academic options from a range of six subject groups, with three options being studied at Higher Level (their main choices) and three being studied at Standard Level.

The benefit of this approach is that every pupil is able to focus on areas crucial to their academic aims while at the same time continuing with their studies in other areas, ensuring "life long learning" and a more rounded education.
