The cocurricular and academic enrichment programme is a significant strength of the school. The programme is extensive and inclusive, providing for a wide variety of pupils’ interests and for all performance levels.

What distinguishes Haileybury’s co-curricular provision is not simply the scale of opportunity, but the culture that surrounds it. Pupils are encouraged to explore widely, take intellectual risks and discover talents they may never have realised they possessed. The result is a vibrant and inclusive community in which co-curricular life is woven into the fabric of the school and plays a central role in developing confident, rounded and engaged young people.
- Amy Sparrow, Director of Activities
Activities and societies are at the heart of the co-curricular programme at Haileybury. The School’s approach is built around the belief that education extends far beyond the classroom, encouraging pupils to explore new interests, develop leadership skills and discover lifelong passions.
The breadth of opportunity is striking; whether a pupil is an accomplished performer, elite athlete, aspiring academic or simply curious to try something new, there is genuinely something for everyone.

Academic societies play a particularly important role in enriching intellectual life.
Pupils can participate in a wide range of discussion groups, competitions and specialist societies that encourage debate, creativity and independent thinking. Societies such as the Attlee Society provide opportunities for pupils to discuss politics, current affairs and global issues, while other academic groups focus on areas such as medicine, astrophysics, economics, history, literature, science, entrepreneurship and international relations. Haileybury’s growing programme includes opportunities such as Model United Nations, debating, public speaking, the National History Challenge, geography competitions and enterprise initiatives, allowing pupils to pursue academic interests well beyond the curriculum.
Haileybury also actively encourages pupils to create and lead their own societies.
Recent pupil-led initiatives have included finance and investment clubs, robotics groups, architecture societies and even the pioneering Space Economy Society, which explores future careers and innovation in the global space sector. This culture of pupil leadership means that pupils are not simply participants in the co-curricular programme, but often become the driving force behind it.
Alongside academic enrichment, Haileybury offers an enormous range of creative, practical and recreational activities.
Pupils can take part in beekeeping, scuba diving, chess, knitting, photography, climbing, sailing, dance, martial arts, radio broadcasting and community action projects, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and international expeditions. Sport and the arts remain central pillars of school life, but the programme is deliberately designed to include pupils of all abilities and interests, not only elite performers.
