Life at Haileybury is about far more than lessons. It is a vibrant, caring community where pupils are known well, supported carefully and encouraged to make the most of every opportunity.

Each pupil, both day and boarders, is a member of a warm and supportive house community led by our dedicated Housemasters and Housemistresses (HMs) supported by Deputy HMs, Matrons, Resident Tutors and Tutor teams. These teams are responsible for creating support networks that allow pupils to thrive.
Our pastoral philosophy is based around 'time and trust' and our tutoring system adds an additional layer of support. In addition to regular tutorials during the week, every three weeks there are Long Tutorials, where tutors have dedicated one-to-one time with each pupil to discuss any pressing pastoral and academic matters. In addition all pupils are tracked pastorally through our STEER programme which monitors pupil progress and helps us to identify areas which need attention. To supplement all this we have our award winning Health and Wellbeing Centre, safeguarding team, counselling service and chaplaincy which are all closely involved in pastoral care.
Pastoral care is a constant partnership between school and home and regular communication with parents ensures that pupils' wellbeing is placed at the heart of all we do.
Haileybury offers a flexible and inclusive approach to day and boarding, designed to suit different family needs from Year 7 through to Year 13. More than two-thirds of pupils are boarders, while day pupils also benefit from wrap-around care, activities, sport and the wider all-round provision of school life.
For younger pupils, the Lower School provides a holistic introduction to senior school life. Boarding for Lower School pupils is in a supportive setting, with Highfield House offering a purpose-built home for boarders in Years 7 and 8. As pupils move through the School, they continue to benefit from the same strong pastoral care and sense of belonging.

Whichever House a pupil joins, they will quickly feel it is the right one for them.
Every House has its own character and a strong sense of pride, and friendly rivalry adds energy and spirit to school life. What remains consistent across all Houses is the quality of care: every pupil is supported by an experienced and committed pastoral team, dedicated to ensuring they feel known, supported and able to thrive.

The tutors spend lots of time in the House with all of the pupils and get to know their tutees really well through the weekly tutor group meetings and the regular 1:1 long tutorials. They understand the pupils' learner profiles, their goals and ambitions, and are always there to listen to the pupils. They care about their wellbeing and guide them to become the best version of themselves.
