All pupils are able to access every aspect of school life with confidence, independence and success.
At Haileybury, we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and supportive learning environment in which every pupil is encouraged to achieve their full potential.
The Learning Support Department plays a central role in ensuring that all pupils are able to access every aspect of school life with confidence, independence and success. We believe that all teachers are learning support teachers. Alongside this, some pupils with additional learning needs may benefit from tailored support with their academic work and study skills.

Our experienced and highly-qualified Learning Support team works collaboratively with teachers, tutors, and pupils to provide support that meets individual learning needs. We recognise that every pupil learns differently, and our aim is to equip pupils with the strategies, confidence and self-awareness needed to become successful lifelong learners.
Support is available for pupils with formally identified Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism spectrum conditions, as well as for pupils who may require additional guidance with study skills, organisation, literacy, numeracy, English as an Additional Language (EAL), or following a period of absence from school.
Our provision is flexible and personalised, and may include:
Following referral, where appropriate, pupils may be assessed by our qualified Specialist Assessor for learning differences and eligibility for Access Arrangements in internal and public examinations, in accordance with JCQ regulations. The Department works closely with teaching staff and the Exams Office to ensure appropriate support is in place.
The Learning Support Department also provides guidance and training for staff across the School, promoting a whole-school approach to inclusive teaching and adaptive learning strategies. We develop a detailed understanding of each pupil’s learning profile and ensure that support is both consistent and effective.
Above all, we aim to nurture resilient, confident and independent learners who understand their strengths, develop strategies to overcome challenges, and are empowered to thrive academically and personally both during their time at school and beyond.
At Haileybury, the English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision ensures that pupils for whom English is not their first language are fully supported throughout their academic journey.
All teachers take action to develop our pupils’ speaking, listening, reading and writing to the highest standard possible. Although many pupils have the ability to communicate in English on a day-to-day basis, the level of English language comprehension required for academic study is much higher and more detailed, and can require additional support, in some cases, for a number of years.

Our EAL specialist teacher works closely with subject teachers, tutors and Houseparents to ensure that all pupils are able to access the curriculum effectively and confidently. We offer a tailored programme of support designed to develop pupils' academic English, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, enabling them to achieve their full potential in all areas of school life.
Key aspects of our EAL provision include:
Creating Confident Communicators
Our goal is to nurture confident communicators and independent learners, ensuring that language is a bridge, not a barrier, to academic success and full participation in the rich life of the Haileybury community.
