AS/A2 Levels

The main criterion for choosing an A Level subject should be enthusiasm for it. We generally do best in the things we enjoy most. It is undoubtedly the case that the best results a pupil can obtain are essential for progression to the university course he or she wishes to read.

Having said that, most courses require a level of aptitude too. Problems can arise when a pupil chooses courses in the face of contrary indications from subject teachers. This is most often the case in subjects which are sequential. It is unlikely, probably impossible, for someone to do well in Mathematics A Level if you have gained only a C grade at I/GCSE. To be frank, your chances of success in any subject at A Level are limited if you have gained a C or, even a B grade in many subjects, at I/GCSE.

When it comes to the question of which A Levels match particular careers, there are few hard and fast rules. For many careers any combination of subjects is acceptable. However, many professional careers do have a preference for "traditional" A Levels.

If you are contemplating applying to Oxford, Cambridge, Russell Group, or Durham and York universities, your choice of A Levels is very important. These universities have strong preferences for some subjects rather than others and you need to take particular advice from our team before you make your choices.

Some university subjects require certain A Level subjects. It is all but impossible to study Medicine or Veterinary Science at university without having Chemistry A Level. It is very difficult to study Engineering without Mathematics and Physics.
