Sixth Form Academic Life
As one of the top boarding schools in the UK, Haileybury is academically ambitious and we want you to be academically ambitious as well. You will undoubtedly benefit from the expertise of our highly qualified academic staff. Our supportive system of pastoral care will help you to make the transition to adulthood. Haileybury's Sixth Form is very much a staging post between the directed learning of your I/GCSE years and the independent learning you will experience at university. As a Sixth Former, you will have to develop the attitudes and skills which enable you to learn on your own, albeit with appropriate direction. It is absolutely essential that you enjoy academic work for its own sake. Clearly, the IB Diploma or A Levels both provide you with a passport to university. But that passport will carry far greater weight if it is imprinted with your own desire to learn and to make the best use of your abilities.
Academic work will be your main priority in the Sixth Form. However, Haileybury recognises that the world demands much more of its citizens than a set of good A Level or IB results. If you like, academic results provide the key to the garden. How far you can travel in the garden depends on other qualities you have developed. The Sixth Form is a time that allows you to develop and broaden many other abilities besides the academic. The ability to work in a team, the ability to communicate in a variety of circumstances, the ability to network, the ability to lead others, the ability to have fun and enjoy life appropriately, and the ability to accept responsibility and use it effectively are all encouraged by our wide programme of extra-curricular activities.
In our rapidly changing world, creativity, flexibility and adaptability are essential characteristics of successful individuals. As a boarding school, Haileybury fosters and values these qualities. Our aim is to provide self-confident young men and women who will find fulfilment and happiness in their future lives. Haileybury allows this aspiration to become reality.
