What is Haileybury Horizons?

We believe that a traditional, broad academic curriculum lies at the heart of the Removes Year (Year 9). However, we also want our pupils to develop an understanding of current issues whilst strengthening those skills that allow them to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Thus, as of September 2011, all pupils in the Removes receive one lesson per week on a six-week carousel of subjects under the umbrella title of Haileybury Horizons. The carousel of subjects will include Current Affairs, Cultural Awareness, Debating, Experimental Sciences and Ways of Knowing.

Through very "hands on" experiential learning, the course aims to inspire our pupils to become more aware of the world around them and thus become successful, responsible, internationally minded citizens. In Experimental Sciences, for example, the pupils will not be sitting with their textbooks open but instead actively working on a project that includes reference to a range of scientific concepts, reference to environmental and economic issues, and some practical work. The aim might be to work out the best material for a carrier bag. They then test the strength of various types of materials, research the economic and environmental benefits and costs of each material and deliver a final presentation to the rest of the group. In Debating pupils will be taught to speak in public with confidence, articulate a well-reasoned argument whilst analysing why the other person is "wrong". In Ways of Knowing pupils will be asked to consider "how do we know what we know?" and how might our understanding of the world be affected by emotion or language or culture.

The whole Haileybury Horizons course is holistic and designed to enrich the entire curriculum. Thus, for example, Current Affairs will be partly used as a vehicle for improving pupils' rhetorical skills in Debating or understanding of historical and political events, whilst introducing styles of Music and the History of Art may inspire the pupils to develop a new love of opera or jazz, Monet or Michelangelo.
