Lower School Academic Life
As one of the top independent schools in the UK, Haileybury sets high academic standards, even for its Lower School pupils. As such, boys and girls joining our Lower School, which covers Years 7 and 8, need to be academically sound, while also relishing challenges in sport, music, drama and other activities.
Class sizes are small, ranging from 15 to 20, allowing teachers to give each and every pupil individual care and attention. Tutors monitor academic progress and provide personal support and encouragement throughout the school day, while specialist subject teachers offer expert tuition in all areas. Classroom work is supplemented by regular trips and visits.
Pupils study the following subjects during their two years in the Lower School: Art and Design, Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology, Drama, English, French, Geography, History, ICT (Information and Communications Technology), Latin, Mathematics, Music, PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education), Physical Education, Physics, Religious Studies and Spanish.
Lessons are taught in the dedicated Lower School classrooms, except for those subjects requiring special facilities, such as the Sciences, Music, Design Technology, Art and Physical Education, which use the Main School buildings.
An hour of homework is set each day and pupils are encouraged to use the Library and its resources regularly.
Scholarships are available for able pupils. You may apply for an All Rounder Award, or an Academic, Music or Sports scholarship as well as a bursary.
