There is a proud tradition of rugby at Haileybury, dating back to the 19th century. Over the years, the College has played all the major public schools including Harrow, Tonbridge, Uppingham and Wellington, and retains a prestigious fixture list.
This year, Michael Owen (ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions Captain) takes up the post of Director of Rugby. This is an incredible opportunity for the College, ensuring that the pupils experience the very latest coaching techniques. In addition, we have 24 experienced coaches running some 16 teams, many of them with vast experience playing first-class rugby. The strength of the coaching team is unparalleled and ensures that all pupils benefit from a positive and enjoyable environment in which to learn and progress in the sport.
We are also lucky to have very generous financial support from Old Haileyburians RFC who sponsor the college £25,000 per annum for new equipment and subsidising tours. There has never been a better era for a promising young player to join Haileybury. The completion of the new second all weather surface pitch has coincided with the exciting development of a new ground which has made possible the addition of two more pitches, bringing the total number to eight. This upgrading of facilities will continue, ensuring that Haileybury is at the forefront of schools’ rugby. Our inspirational 1st XV pitch, with the stunning backdrop of Terrace and Chapel, is the envy of many a visiting school.
Recent leavers include premiership players Jamie George (Saracens & England U20), Chris Wyles (Saracens & USA) and Matt Hankin (Saracens & England U20) who won the Junior World Cup this summer, beating Wales in the Final having overcome the Junior All Blacks in the Semi-Final.
